Disengagement of the hindquarters has its place. It can be an excellent emergency brake, a tool for regaining softness, relaxation, and redirecting a horse mentally. But when disengagement becomes the foundation of performance training, it often works against true athletic movement.

A performance horse must learn to ENGAGE the hindquarters, not constantly disengage them.

True engagement means the horse steps deeper underneath himself with the hind legs, carrying weight behind, lifting the back, and creating impulsion that flows through the entire body. This is where power, collection, balance, speed control, and maneuverability come from. Whether in cutting, ranch work, reining, cow horse, dressage, or even a solid trail horse — engagement is what creates efficient, athletic movement.

Disengagement breaks that chain of impulsion. It disconnects the drive from the hind end and redirects energy away from forward motion. Again, useful at times for control and safety — but counterproductive if overused in horses expected to perform with strength, precision, and fluidity.

The goal is not simply to stop the feet. The goal is to develop a horse that carries himself correctly, drives from behind, stays soft through the body, and remains mentally connected while in motion.

Impulsion is not speed.
Engagement is not tension.
True horsemanship develops both softness AND power together.

A horse that learns to engage the hindquarters properly will move with greater balance, cadence, responsiveness, and longevity than one constantly taught to disconnect from the rear end.

True collection does not come from pulling on the front end or forcing a horse into a frame. Real collection is developed from correct impulsion generated by the hind end, flowing freely through a soft, supple back, and finally expressed in lightness and balance in the front.

When the hindquarters are properly engaged, the horse begins to carry himself with elevation, cadence, and self-carriage rather than artificial headset or restriction. Too many riders chase the appearance of collection while neglecting the foundation that creates it.

As Paul Belasik wisely stated:
“The hind legs create the energy, the back transmits it, and the front end receives it.”

True horsemanship is not about manufacturing posture — it is about developing the horse’s body and mind so balance becomes natural. Collection is the result of correct riding, patience, gymnastic development, and harmony between horse and rider.

A horse is not a machine built to fit neatly into a training system. Every horse learns differently, responds differently, and carries different experiences into the arena. True horsemanship begins when we stop trying to force horses into our mold and instead learn to adapt ourselves to meet the horse where they are.

Going slow is not weakness. Patience is not poor training. In reality, slowing down enough to build understanding and trust creates a far stronger foundation than rushing for quick results ever could.

When a horse trusts you, they will try for you. They will stay softer, more willing, and more confident because the partnership was built on communication instead of pressure. Too many people focus on making the horse submit to the method, but great horsemen learn to read the horse in front of them and adjust accordingly.

The goal is not simply obedience. The goal is connection.

At Until Grace Horsemanship, we believe in developing horses at their pace, building confidence through clarity, consistency, and trust. Because the strongest partnerships are never forced — they are earned.

⚠️ When “bombproof” goes too far…

One of the biggest misconceptions in horsemanship is that the goal is to desensitize a horse to everything. Tarps, flags, bags, noise, chaos—you name it.

Here’s the problem:
You can’t desensitize a horse to everything. It’s impossible.

And when you try, you often create a bigger issue…

➡️ You dull their sensitivity.

A horse that’s overly desensitized can become:

* Slow to respond
* Mentally checked out
* Less connected to the rider
* Harder to communicate with when it actually matters

At Until Grace Horsemanship, I take a different approach.

Instead of trying to eliminate every reaction, I focus on exposure with purpose—teaching the horse to:
✔️ Look to the rider for direction
✔️ Stay mentally engaged
✔️ Respond with trust, not just numbness

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about creating a horse that feels nothing…

It’s about creating a horse that trusts you enough to handle anything.

That’s the difference between a dull horse… and a dependable one.
