🐴 Stable Thoughts - My Weekly Devotional
What does it mean to live life to the fullest? How do we know when we have stepped into such a way of living? Being with horses is like being in a constant learning center for spiritual truth. And I feel like the answer to those questions is so beautifully illustrated in the world of horses. A horse left in its pasture is fully content as long as they have their basic needs met - food, water and safety. They do everything they think they should do. And if you could ask them they'd probably tell you that life is great. They don't know that there's a world beyond the fence they've looked at it passing by, but I'm not sure it enters their minds that they could actually be a part of it. Their life may not be bad but it's also not at its fullest level. When we train horses correctly, we are inviting them beyond the fences. Their worlds don't have to have those boundaries anymore. They grow in ways they didn't know it's possible and do things they never thought they could do. Like the thrill of racing barrels, jumping fences and exploring trails full of interest and beauty. Watch the faces, the body language of those who were trained and cared for correctly. See those who have reached their full potential. They are at a whole new level: they know it and they love it. When I brought Raina home all those years ago, she was so happy to be in a peaceful herd and have all her needs met. But when we started training her is when the true transformation began. Had I left her to simply wander the pasture, eating drinking and sleeping, I know she would not have experienced the confidence, courage and excitement that she daily has now
So where are you today? In your spiritual journey I mean. Are you still behind the fences of life? Maybe it's been fine. Maybe it's comfortable. Maybe it's even pleasant. But if we take that painfully deep look at our lives, we will find that if we aren't in God's will for our lives, we are not living to the fullest. And our Heavenly Father comes to us with an invitation: Come. Come with Me to places you'd never even thought to dream of. He calls us to transfer our thoughts, plans and actions from the temporary to the eternal. When we accept Christ as our Savior is the day our greatest adventure begins. But it carries far beyond that. It's a lifestyle, it's a challenge and a calling that is placed on our hearts. Do you hear it? Do you feel it? That is Jesus beckoning you to live life to the fullest, to be all that you were created to be. It will likely be outside your comfort zone; it will likely include trying moments. But we know that in His perfect love for us, it will be worth it. May we daily let Him show us how to live life to the fullest, more abundantly.

"I came so that they could have lifeβ€”indeed, so that they could live life to the fullest." John 10:10

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

🐴 Stable Thoughts - My Weekly Devotional
After a lovely time of riding lessons today, I went to let the horses have their daily turnout. Right now, we are rotating pastures through grazing smaller patches at a time to help extend our grass. Walking through the paddock gate, Dolly, Cutter, Reina, and Dixie began to munch on the first pasture, unaware that the gate to their new, lush pasture was open. I was excited for them to get their full grazing time in. And I didn't want them to miss out on a single minute of it. I jogged to the opening so I could show them. Before I'd even called out for them to follow me, I heard the rhythm of horses running behind me. Coming from four different corners of the first pasture, each horse had broken into a lope and headed in my direction. The sound of my footsteps synced with their hoofbeats. The horses' ears were pricked forward, their eyes bright, and their manes flying in the breeze. Horses are extremely in tune with emotions, and even from across the pasture, they had been able to sense my excitement, that I had something good to show them. I continued to run, reaching the gate just before Dolly. I opened my arms to direct them down the path that would lead to the new grass. One by one, the horses fell into line, pausing a moment beside me, as though saying thanks, before cantering off to graze. I watch them run down the path and round the corner to enter the next pasture. I smile as they make a loop on the fenceline before diving in to eat.
During revival at our church this past week, our evangelist reminded us that as Christians, we should be the happiest people in the world. We have been blessed beyond all measure! We have received the gift of our salvation paid for by Christ's blood on the cross. We have the promise of our eternal home awaiting us in heaven, the pearly gates opening to us by the robe of righteousness that Jesus has laid on our shoulders. In addition to these incredible gifts, we also have the comfort of His presence, the power of prayer, and God's guidance in our lives. We have every reason to be rejoicing. It should be so prevalent in our hearts and actions that it is obvious to those around us. It should be the kind of joy that draws others to the heart of Christ. Y'all, we need to have contagious joy! The world should notice what we've got. We should be so excited about Jesus that people cannot help but wonder, "What has made them so happy?" in a way that makes them want to follow. Because we've been given something too good to keep to ourselves! Let's point others to the redemption and filling love of our Savior. Let's point those around us to the Way, the Truth, and the Light. Let's run through the pastures of our lives and embrace His joy in a way that makes our smiles transfer to others in real and meaningful ways. That we might rejoice even more as they begin to experience that joy for themselves.

"These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full." John 15:11

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope." Romans 15:13

"My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed." Psalm 71:23

Here you can watch the whole process as Tharp's Horse Shoeing does Dolly's teeth as well. Notice how relaxed Dolly is! This isn't her first time, so she knows exactly how much better she'll feel afterwards!
If you are in need of any farrier work or having your horse's teeth floated, I highly, highly recommend Tharp's Horse Shoeing! You won't find better anywhere!

I'm so blessed to have not only the best farrier, but also one who does my horses' teeth, too! A horse's adult teeth grows constantly, and as they get older their teeth can wear unevenly, causing sharp points. This can cause pain when eating, leading to weight loss. So, we float their teeth, which means we file down the sharp teeth so they can eat comfortably. Steve Tharp of Tharp's Horse Shoeing does teeth floating naturally, without any sedation! It's incredible to watch! My horses absolutely love him!

🐴 Stable Thoughts - My Weekly Devotional
I let out a shrill whistle that echoed off the forest beyond the fences. "Girls!" I call hopefully. But I am met only with silence.
We had been in town much later than we'd anticipated, so I was very late giving our four mares their daily turnout. And now darkness had fallen. The kind of night that wraps around you like a thick, dark blanket, making you want to just head to the house and sleep. Instead, I was standing at the pasture gate, peering across the black-cloaked pasture, willing my horses to appear.
"Lord, please let them come up," I whisper.
Minutes ticked by as I called and rattled feed cans. But not one horse returned. Not that I blamed them: why should they leave all that good, green grass when their turnout wasn't even up? But it was very late, and I couldn't leave them out overnight. I sighed and trudged back into the barn to retrieve Dolly's halter. I click on my phone's flashlight and leave the barn circle of spilling light. The hum of insects and the occasional rustle of the wind in the trees are the only sounds besides my footsteps, muffled by the grass. I cross the first small pasture and head up the path to where the horses are grazing. All the while, I am still wishing the horses would've come to my call, knowing that God could've brought them up. Wondering why He didn't when I was tired and hopeful, and not wanting to venture out into the night. At that moment, I glance up just in time to see a huge shooting star arching above the trees. My breath catches as I watch it wink back into the black sky. The smell of yarrow in blossom filled my senses, so much richer, so much sweeter in the night than I'd ever experienced in daylight. Not a few yards further, I pause again, looking at the reflection of night's canopy in the glass-like surface of the pond, as though the stars themselves had decided to float on still waters tonight.
"Lord, it's amazing." I breathe.
The darkness no longer feels heavy. The walk no longer seems burdensome. Everywhere I look, I see beauty - a tiny flower glowing on the path, the grasses brushing my boots nodding as though they're about to slumber, the huge willow tree standing guard over the hilltop. Soon, I reach the horses. Dolly nuzzled my hand for treats after I slipped on her halter. As we begin our return walk home, the rest of my horses fall into line behind Dolly and me. I walk back filled with delight and wonder
I'd thought that asking God to bring the horses up would've been a good thing - a story about how God helps us in night, when we're tired and late. But instead, I was given a greater blessing. The Lord called me out of my 'comfort zone' and into something more beautiful than I could've ever imagined. Had I not left the barn, I would have missed every single blessing that God had perfectly timed and placed. And I was reminded of an important truth that we see all throughout the Bible: God's ways are higher than ours. We want a quick solution, an easy way, and a miracle that comes to us. Instead, God calls us to step out in faith. He beckons us to take a journey that He has prepared for us, not to exhaust us, but that He might bless us. He wants to pour out His goodness and love on us - but we must take that first step. We have surrendered our own ideas of how things should go and let Him guide us. Sometimes what feels like an unanswered prayer is actually the Savior's invitation into something so much better than what we had asked for. Yes, He may call us into the unknown, but it is only for our benefit. I was asking for help with the chores. God gave me a shooting star instead and a promise that no matter the night we may face, He has already gone before us and prepared the paths that we will walk.

"For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." Isaiah 55:9

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." Jeremiah 29:11

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

🐴 Stable Thoughts - My Weekly Devotional
Watching a mother's love in action is one of the most beautiful things. And in this season, we see it all around us. In the little bird that works tirelessly to feed her hungry nest. In the wild, does that pause to make sure their baby is safe before fleeing to safety. In the cattle that walk into the new field with their calves by their sides. I've watched it in my mare, Cutter. Though she had tragically lost her seventh foal right before she came into our lives, she immediately 'adopted' my two youngest brothers, who were seven and eight at the time. She would be so careful and affectionate with them. Even as they've grown into young men, she still has a special place in her heart for them - and all little children that visit the stable! Even in her own loss, she continued to give that mothering love that knows no bounds. The care, the selflessness, the concern, joy, and beyond. I've seen it so constant and enduring in my own mother's love for each of us as her children; her believing in and directing us has made all the difference in our lives. I've seen that love in families, young and old, around me. Seeing a mother looking at her child with absolute pure love - whether they be a baby in her arms or an adult walking in God's will - is a glimpse of eternity. This is what we celebrate on Mother's Day - a moment to let the mothers in our lives know that all the sleepless nights, all the unseen tears, and all the behind-the-scenes work they forever do are not forgotten! And I know that not everyone has had the blessing of a Mom like mine - and it breaks my heart. So whether you've have that enduring love, are celebrating her only in memory, or if you never knew your mother, know this: God, Who is the very Source of this love, sees you and loves you. You have never been invisible to Him. "For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb." Psalm 139:13. He desires to draw you to His heart, to carry you, and call you His child. "The Lord appeared, saying, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you." Jeremiah 31:3. "How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings," Matthew 23:37b. And our Lord promised us that even if a mother could forget her child, He will never forget us (Isaiah 49:15). He stands ready to make each of us His children, if we will only let Him.
So, as we celebrate the mothers in our lives and the love they give, let us also remember we are celebrating the Source and Creator of that deep, eternal love.
