🐴 Stable Thoughts - My Weekly Devotional
My Dad used to sit and listen to me as a child jabber on about all the things I would do with my horses someday. And ever since horses came into my life as a teenager, he has worked tirelessly to build fences, shelters, and barns for our growing herd over the years to help make my dream come true. Though now the four strokes he's had have robbed so much of who my Dad used to be, he still comes outside to watch me ride, still listens to me talk about my equine plans, and still helps remind us when the pastures need to be mowed or when the fences need repair. Even when he can't find words and might not remember our names easily, he is still asking where each of us is, making sure we're okay, and wanting to hear about our day.
What is a father supposed to be? I've gotten to see it firsthand with a Dad who was always invested in our lives, who loved, encouraged, and supported us; a Dad who took his role as a father and spiritual leader seriously. That's my Dad! Perhaps you too have had this and are celebrating them now. Maybe that is the father you are, or the kind of father you want to be. Or maybe that's the father you always wanted to have. No matter where you may stand in this, we can look to what we learn and know of our Heavenly Father to give us a clear understanding of what a father should be.
“I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:18 tells us that God is active! He declares that He will be our Father, that He will make us family, if we'll only let Him.
"See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God!" 1 John 3:1 God is love! And He is not stingy with His love, but lavishly pours it out on those who will receive it.
"As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him." Psalm 103:13 Our Heavenly Father is full of grace and compassion. That does not mean He overlooks sin or lets us get away with it. No, it means that even when we stumble, even when we fall, He gives us a way to be restored through the redeeming blood of Jesus Christ.
"What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" Luke 11:11-13 God generously gives. He takes joy in blessing us and providing for us. We are never left desolate or abandoned. The Lord sees our needs long before we even see them and is constantly at work behind the scenes to move on our behalf.
In just these few glimpses of the one true God, we see His character reflected in His actions. We see His heart. We see His Fatherhood - and how our earthly fathers should reflect that action, love, grace, compassion, and generosity in their own fatherhood journey. As flawed human beings, we all fall short of our callings. But a true father keeps his eyes on his own Heavenly Father, daily growing in his spiritual walk. And this Father's Day, we celebrate the Dads who have loved us and our Heavenly Father who makes that love possible.

🐴 Stable Thoughts - My Weekly Devotional
Each step I take causes a little splash around my boots as I cross the first pasture. The ground is soggy and littered with puddles from the inches of rain we have gotten this week. I begin down the path to the far pasture where my four mares have been grazing most of the day. My foot suddenly slips on some mud, and I stumble a few feet before recapturing my balance once more. I've walked this very path a thousand times before, but the storms had made it unfamiliar. I carefully pick my way through the mud, tall grasses, and brambles that peek out from under the fences. I reach the end of the path at the top of the hill. I see the horses grazing at the far end of the pasture, so happy for their turnout time after the hours of rain. They lift their heads to greet me as I draw closer, and Dolly starts walking toward me. Not the cautious, hesitant steps I'd been taking. No, Dolly strides forward in calm and confidence. I feed her a treat as I buckle on her halter, debating whether I should walk or ride back to the barn.
"I think you're more stable walking in this than I am," I tell her as I use a nearby fence to help me swing a stride her silky back.
As I turn her towards home, the rest of the herd falls into line behind us. As we step onto the muddy path, I stay poised to get off should she have any trouble. But she doesn't. Instead, she nimbly chose her way, weaving to find the most solid ground, her steps smooth and steady. Halfway back, I relax and lay down my makeshift lead rope reins. Dolly knew what she was doing; I trusted her instincts and abilities. Though Reina and Dixie wanted to run home, prancing with barely contained energy, Dolly continued at a slow, safe speed, with Cutter following her step for step. We reach the barn much more easily than my walk out.
Dolly's confidence came from her experience. She'd already walked this path. While I was trying to figure out what to do, Dolly already knew where to avoid, where to step. And she willingly showed us the way. Life can be like that path - when things get muddy and unfamiliar. We feel like she should be fine; that we should be able to walk on like we always have before. But then we slip, we stumble, and suddenly we're filled with doubts and questions. That's when we need someone like Dolly to come alongside us. The ones who have already walked the path we find ourselves on. We know that our Lord always walks beside us in every moment and that He alone is our Rock and our Comfort. But He often works through people that He's placed in our lives. He brings those who have been where we now are to lift us up, to show us the way, and to carry us. The reminders that it's okay to slow down, even when the world tries to push us to hurry. No matter what, God doesn't leave us to struggle alone. Trust Him to bring you safely through the mud by His own loving Hand and by those He sends our way. And someday, because you've walked it, you might be able to do the same for someone else.

"Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing." 1 Thessalonians 5:11

🐴 Stable Thoughts - My Weekly Devotional
The morning started out with a simple off-leash walk with my dog Bailey. And it ended up as an hour-long search... One minute she was beside me, with my other dog, Buddy; the next, I couldn't see her. Assuming she was just up ahead as usual, I wasn't too worried. But as I looked and called her name, it soon became startlingly obvious that my little beagle had wandered off. Deeply concerned, my Mom and sister joined me in combing the nearby fields, paths, and roads. With each passing minute, I feared that she was getting further and further away. We whistled and called her name until we were nearly hoarse. We asked neighbors if they'd seen her. But no Bailey. Though she'd survived being hit by a car before (not long before we first saw her), I was so worried that she might run into the road again.
"Lord, where is she? Please show us where she is!" I prayed over and over.
My sister and I drove several nearby roads before heading back home to regroup. As we pulled into the driveway, I saw Reina standing in the paddock. She very clearly looked toward me and then turned to stare out towards the woods beyond our pastures. She looked at me again as I got out of the van and nickered - staring back at the woods once more. It was then that my Mom came running over, telling us she'd just heard Bailey's howl back towards those woods. We dash down that way once more, calling her name. The barks and howls become closer, and in a few minutes, I see my little girl crawling out of a briar patch, panting and exhausted. I scoop her up into my arms and carry her home, as we all rejoice that she is safe! It was after Bailey was back inside, curled up beside me on a pillow, that I recognized that God had answered my prayer for Him to show me where my little dog had gone; and He had done it through Reina. Had God impressed upon her to show me earlier too, and I had missed it? Had I been so blinded by the panic of the problem that I had failed to see God's answer, given to me through my sweet, red mare? I stroked Bailey's fur as I began to ponder - how many times have I asked something of the Lord and then totally missed the answer He gave me? How many times have I failed to hear, to listen because I was looking at the struggle and not at the Savior Who loves me? The truth is God always answers - every prayer, every time. It may not come in the way we expect, it may not be the answer we want, it might not come at the time we wanted it, but He does not leave us in the agony of questions and doubts. He comes to us. He answers us in beautiful, new, and unexpected ways. I want to keep this at the forefront of my mind. I want this to be the context in which I pray: with confidence that He hears and answers; with eyes open to see the answer when it comes. A precious and well-needed lesson that I really needed right now, taught to me through a lost dog, a horse, and an answer.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people." Ephesians 6:18

"And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us." 1 John 5:14

🐴 Stable Thoughts - My Weekly Devotional
What does it mean to live life to the fullest? How do we know when we have stepped into such a way of living? Being with horses is like being in a constant learning center for spiritual truth. And I feel like the answer to those questions is so beautifully illustrated in the world of horses. A horse left in its pasture is fully content as long as they have their basic needs met - food, water and safety. They do everything they think they should do. And if you could ask them they'd probably tell you that life is great. They don't know that there's a world beyond the fence they've looked at it passing by, but I'm not sure it enters their minds that they could actually be a part of it. Their life may not be bad but it's also not at its fullest level. When we train horses correctly, we are inviting them beyond the fences. Their worlds don't have to have those boundaries anymore. They grow in ways they didn't know it's possible and do things they never thought they could do. Like the thrill of racing barrels, jumping fences and exploring trails full of interest and beauty. Watch the faces, the body language of those who were trained and cared for correctly. See those who have reached their full potential. They are at a whole new level: they know it and they love it. When I brought Raina home all those years ago, she was so happy to be in a peaceful herd and have all her needs met. But when we started training her is when the true transformation began. Had I left her to simply wander the pasture, eating drinking and sleeping, I know she would not have experienced the confidence, courage and excitement that she daily has now
So where are you today? In your spiritual journey I mean. Are you still behind the fences of life? Maybe it's been fine. Maybe it's comfortable. Maybe it's even pleasant. But if we take that painfully deep look at our lives, we will find that if we aren't in God's will for our lives, we are not living to the fullest. And our Heavenly Father comes to us with an invitation: Come. Come with Me to places you'd never even thought to dream of. He calls us to transfer our thoughts, plans and actions from the temporary to the eternal. When we accept Christ as our Savior is the day our greatest adventure begins. But it carries far beyond that. It's a lifestyle, it's a challenge and a calling that is placed on our hearts. Do you hear it? Do you feel it? That is Jesus beckoning you to live life to the fullest, to be all that you were created to be. It will likely be outside your comfort zone; it will likely include trying moments. But we know that in His perfect love for us, it will be worth it. May we daily let Him show us how to live life to the fullest, more abundantly.

"I came so that they could have life—indeed, so that they could live life to the fullest." John 10:10

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

💕 My beautiful, amazing Dolly turned 25 today!! ✨ Celebrated with apples, carrots and lots of treats! Dolly is a one-in-a-million kind of girl - who loves, cares and protects with her whole heart! I don't think I'd be where I am today or who I am today without this gorgeous, chocolate-brown mare in my life. Thank you for everything you do, precious girl! I love you more than words can say! ❤️

🐴 Stable Thoughts - My Weekly Devotional
After a lovely time of riding lessons today, I went to let the horses have their daily turnout. Right now, we are rotating pastures through grazing smaller patches at a time to help extend our grass. Walking through the paddock gate, Dolly, Cutter, Reina, and Dixie began to munch on the first pasture, unaware that the gate to their new, lush pasture was open. I was excited for them to get their full grazing time in. And I didn't want them to miss out on a single minute of it. I jogged to the opening so I could show them. Before I'd even called out for them to follow me, I heard the rhythm of horses running behind me. Coming from four different corners of the first pasture, each horse had broken into a lope and headed in my direction. The sound of my footsteps synced with their hoofbeats. The horses' ears were pricked forward, their eyes bright, and their manes flying in the breeze. Horses are extremely in tune with emotions, and even from across the pasture, they had been able to sense my excitement, that I had something good to show them. I continued to run, reaching the gate just before Dolly. I opened my arms to direct them down the path that would lead to the new grass. One by one, the horses fell into line, pausing a moment beside me, as though saying thanks, before cantering off to graze. I watch them run down the path and round the corner to enter the next pasture. I smile as they make a loop on the fenceline before diving in to eat.
During revival at our church this past week, our evangelist reminded us that as Christians, we should be the happiest people in the world. We have been blessed beyond all measure! We have received the gift of our salvation paid for by Christ's blood on the cross. We have the promise of our eternal home awaiting us in heaven, the pearly gates opening to us by the robe of righteousness that Jesus has laid on our shoulders. In addition to these incredible gifts, we also have the comfort of His presence, the power of prayer, and God's guidance in our lives. We have every reason to be rejoicing. It should be so prevalent in our hearts and actions that it is obvious to those around us. It should be the kind of joy that draws others to the heart of Christ. Y'all, we need to have contagious joy! The world should notice what we've got. We should be so excited about Jesus that people cannot help but wonder, "What has made them so happy?" in a way that makes them want to follow. Because we've been given something too good to keep to ourselves! Let's point others to the redemption and filling love of our Savior. Let's point those around us to the Way, the Truth, and the Light. Let's run through the pastures of our lives and embrace His joy in a way that makes our smiles transfer to others in real and meaningful ways. That we might rejoice even more as they begin to experience that joy for themselves.
