This is a 9 year old commercial cow and her Valentine's day heifer calf.

You might wonder why a registered Angus breeder would post a commercial cow/calf.

When we started this journey nearly 30 years ago we did so with 14 head of commercial bred heifers. This cow's granddam was one of those. She weighed in at 950 pounds and weaned a 500 plus pound calf every year. Through the years we have strived to breed for efficient, maternal, gentle cattle with the goal that the herd bulls we sell would help to produce this kind of cow & calf for the commercial cattlemen that buy them.

At this stage of the game we only have a handful of commercial cows/calves left in the herd of otherwise registered ones. Their calves are fed out and sold to beef customers each year. It is good to see what kind of commercial offspring are produced with the genetics we choose to use.

I am really happy with this cow and her heifer calf and intend to put the heifer to work in our herd alongside her momma and I hope that the cow will still be producing top notch calves well into her teens.

We weaned calves on Tuesday. I took these pics on Thursday. The first calf heifers/cows had adjusted weaning weights on their calves (all heifers themselves) that ranged from 530 to 584 pounds. We do not creep feed nor do the cows get fed. They get good grass and minerals and fresh water. The dams to these calves weigh 900 to 1000 pounds each. I can't wait to see what these young cows do in the future! NOTE: not all the cows were first calf heifers, the mature cows did just as well though.

2/13/2021 Bubs Southern Charm son. Good BSE, up to date on vaccinations, +1.7 BW epd with an actual birthweight of 78 pounds. His adjusted WW was 614 pounds. We do not creep feed, only grass and momma's milk. He has great feet and is an easy keeper. the second photo is his dam and her twin sister with their 2022 calves shortly after birth.
