The Nevada County Sheriff’s HEART, (Humane Emergency Animal Rescue Team), officially launched on January 1, 2023. It is a nonprofit animal rescue team that is activated by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office during emergencies and evacuations to assist with animal rescue. During most emergencies, the Nevada County Veterinary Disaster Response Team (NCVDRT) will also be activated by the Nevada Count

y Sheriff’s Office and they will continue to provide all of the necessary care and shelter for the animals until they are reunited with their owners. Both teams, HEART and NCVDRT, are staffed by caring, compassionate volunteers with a vast array and decades of experience in all aspects of animal rescue, transportation, and care. These two teams will work closely together, ensuring your animals receive the best care possible during these stressful events.

High temperatures can kill your animals! Be mindful of all of them and especially your dogs on walks! As stated before, be a great animal rescue volunteer and don't shy away from chatting with people about the hazards of heat. Here is a simple chart you can save and show people. It shows the bulk of surfaces we take our animals on walks.

How to protect your dog:
TEST THE PAVEMENT: Use then 7 second rule to gauge if it's too hot. Place your bare foot or the back of your hand on the surface for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's definitely too hot for Rover!
WALK DURING COOLER TIMES: Opt for early mornings or later in the evening if the temps are cooler.
AVOID DIRECT SUNLIGHT: Stick to shady surfaces and grassy areas if possible
CONSIDER PAW PROTECTION: Booties can help but are not a cure-all.
WATCH FOR SIGNS OF OVERHEATING: Heavy panting, lethargy, excessive drooling, or vomiting could indicate Fido is too hot.

WHEN IN DOUBT, DON"T GO OUT
