I hesitate to share a post like this, since it's the ugly side of breeding. But it's also beautiful too....
This baby here had fallen behind and has had me totally stunned at it's amazing will to live. I was hand supplementing this one from the start and last week, it showed signs of fading kitten, so I sat by and watched for signs of suffering. There was none. Just a kitten that seemed dumpy. It lost the suction reflex, and typically if that happens, it's only a matter of time before the kitten passes away. I kept offering syringes of food and it would lick and lap only. I kept up feeding and waiting for what I thought was the inevitable. Then, as suddenly as it started, it started rooting and it's suck reflex returned!
This past week has been a huge bunch of ups and downs. So far, we're back on the upswing and this little purr machine is back to not only surviving, but thriving! Prognosis is guarded, at best, and if this little one pulls through, it will either stay here or be given to someone I trust with a kitten who may or may not end up with a neurological issue due to lack of oxygen (i believe it was trapped under mom while I took a nap).
So, I may have been a bit slower to reply to emails and applications, but I assure you, it's nothing to worry about! It's just that a neonatal life takes the highest priority, and right now, I'm running on about 4 hours of sleep a night to keep an eye on this baby 🥰❤️
