Aero, Bruno and Cucumber had a mini packwalk today in Naches. All three dogs used to really struggle with reactivity.

We had a nice calm (and very chilly) walk around Naches. Cucumber is going to be spending lots of time with her uncle Jonah soon so he came along to learn how to Cucumber.

Aero and Bruno's parents worked together teaching their dogs manners in new environments.

It's so amazing when families work together for their furry friends.

I want to thank everyone who reached out yesterday with kind words of encouragement! 💜

It makes me feel so good to know I have such a supportive community. Especially on tough days.

There's always going to be some unhealed person with nasty things to say, I just block them and move on but it still takes its toll. Fortunately I have an amazing following of awesome people who love dogs and want to succeed. Y'all are my p*eps! 🤘💜🐾

There's an old dog trainer saying...
"What you pet is what you get" and it's true. If you're petting your dog when they jump all over you and guests, you're reinforcing that you want more jumping.

If you pet your dog when they bark at strangers, they're going to keep barking.

Anything you're allowing to happen will continue. Barking at the mailman, pulling on the leash, counter surfing, resource guarding people, furniture, toys...

It's the reason you hear trainers talk about structure and management. The better habits you start with your dog, the less management they will need. The more destructive, chaotic and naughty, the more structure and management you need to add.

Many times owners are un-aware of what they are allowing until it becomes a real issue. If you always let your dog barge through doorways, one day they might run out the front door and hurt someone. Even if it's "playful" that person could sue and then you'll no longer have your dogs.

Take a moment today with your dog and determine how you could add some structure to their lives. Dogs love routine and guidance, and you'll love a less chaotic home.

Let's examine some emotion based catch phases used to promote a false fairy tale.

"Purely positive"
"Force free"
"Non-aversive"
"Punishment is abuse"
"Dogs never correct each other"
"Stress free"

All of these terms are well thought out to appeal to your emotions. They sound nice, but the reality is it's a load of crap.

If you know me, you know I'm blunt, honest and transparent with how I train. I don't sell you lies. I show you straight up how to fix your relationship with your dog.

I don't know what kind of fairytale utopia the folks that preach this kinda stuff live in, but I live in reality.

Dogs do correct each other. Stress, fear and anxiety are all part of life for humans and dogs.

Does your dog get shots from the vet? Sure. Is it stressful and maybe a little painful? Sure. Does it keep them safe and healthy? Yes.

If you run a red light in front of a cop, are you not punished with a ticket?

I'm speaking out about this for several reasons:

1. I see owners time and time again spend thousands of their hard earned money on well marketed training to get ZERO RESULTS.

2. Members of this so-called "purely positive" agenda send me hateful messages and even death treats daily, claiming my training methods are cruel and abusive.

3. I'm always going to stick up for the underdog. I won't let myself or my clients be bullied by these "trainers".

It's a real issue friends. Dogs and their owners are struggling more than ever because they've been bullied and guilted into thinking any form of discipline is abuse. Dogs are biting owners, children, killing small animals, getting into fights and are out of control and broken because of a lack of leadership.

I don't care how you choose to train. Just don't lie to people who are asking for help with their dog. If you don't like me, scroll past. If I was really cruel and abusive I wouldn't be booked out 8-9 months in advance. Other dog professionals in my community wouldn't be working with me. Veterinarians, rescues and pet stores wouldn't be giving out my cards if any of this were true.

With me what you see is what you get. I will always be transparent with how I train and I will always give you the truth.

I hear "science based training" all the time. The word science is getting thrown around as though it means the end all, be all- truth and facts. It's science! So it must be true right?

Science is always changing as new information is gathered. It's also important when reading into any scientific studies to find out where the funding is coming from. In most cases, it's big pharma. Of course they want our dogs on meds instead of using any actual training. Some of these "studies" are cherry picked to fit an agenda to benefit the pockets of the ones doing the funding.

Here's some experiments done in the name of science:

Separating triplets.
N**i medical experiments.
Japan's Unit 731.
The "monster study"
The Burke and Hare murders.
Surgical experiments on slaves.
Guatemala syphilis study.
The Tuskegee study.
Lobotomies.

Dog training is equal parts art and science. Part of what trainers do every single day is help dogs based on what has worked previously with thousands of other dogs they have trained. They learned this over years of being "in the trenches" working with different dogs over and over for years. They make mistakes and perfect their craft. They didn't just sit in a classroom or take an online test for a "certification".

This is not an attack on science, science is awesome when it's not used to promote an agenda. I'm all for learning more, growing and critical thinking. I always want to encourage people to think for themselves rather than being fooled by clever marketing. It's EVERYWHERE in our society right now, not just with dogs.

Be an informed consumer, look for REAL results, do what's best for you and your dog. And remember, the more complicated someone makes something, is typically a sign of how little they actually know.

There are so many misconceptions about ecollar training. Some people would have you believe that ecollars are abuse. That you just slap it on a dog and start pushing buttons. That your dog won't trust you and will shut down if you use one.

Well none of that is true. Ecollars save lives. Ecollars keep my livestock safe. Ecollars are just a tool to help train dogs.

Here's a glimpse of what ecollar training is really like:

Milo has been here for 4 days. In those 4 days I have only had to correct him once with the ecollar for getting a little too excited with the chickens. Once. He used to chase them & use them as a squeaky toy.

Every morning I have him outside with me while I feed them. He's my assistant and I give him a job to hang out with me while I feed the flock and collect eggs.

He loves to work for love and praise so I make sure I'm giving him plenty of positive reinforcement for giving me the behavior I do want, which is just to observe them, but not to pester them.

I always advocate for the proper use of these tools. With the right training they can be a lifesaver. Not just for the livestock but for the dogs as well.

A while back a woman contacted me about ecollar and e fence training with her dog. He would escape and chase the neighbor's goats. We had an appointment set up for me to come and show her the proper way to use these tools as well as which brand and model would work best for her dog. She ended up getting on to social media and people shamed her for even considering using these tools, so out of guilt and shame, she cancelled her lesson. That same week the dog was shot and killed by the neighbor for going after the goats. That dog was her entire world, but ignorant, uneducated people shamed her into thinking this tool was abuse and now she no longer has her dog.

My goal is always to be transparent about the truth about these tools. In the right hands they can provide freedom and safety. So anytime you hear someone bashing these tools I want you to think of my flock and the woman's dog.

Do any of the dogs I work with look abused and shut down? If you know me, you know the last thing I would ever do is cause harm to these animals. And even though I get hateful messages every single day because I use these tools, I will continue to advocate for their proper usage.

Wonderful post! 🐾🤘

If you buy a dog, you're at fault for shelters being full.

If you adopt, you're to blame for getting a dog with weak genetics.

If you use a prong collar you're abusive.

If you don't train force-free, you don't love your dog.

If you don't punish your dog, your relationship will suck.

If you do punish your dog, you'll destroy whatever relationship you have with them.

If you crate your dog, you're abusive.

If your dog gets into something, you're irresponsible.

If you go to dog parks, you're ruining your dog.

If your dog never plays with other dogs it'll be anti-social.

If you're a dog owner like me then this is just the very beginning of a never-ending list of things that make you feel like you just can't ever win.

Here's my little secret to you: you can't and won't ever win, so STOP TRYING TO!

Stop trying to make them happy with how you live with your dog. Stop listening to all the noise coming your way. Shut off the podcasts, stop reading the blogs, and take a break from the dog social media world and you'll soon realize how much it impacts your relationship with your dog.

The never-ending messages of not being good enough that you, the average dog owner, are being inundated with daily is enough to make even the best, most knowledgeable, and committed dog owners second guess and question themselves.

My advice to you is to stop focusing on all those messages. Find the way that feels and works best for you and solely focus on that.

To hell with what they say or think about your life with your dog!

Stick to living your best life with your four-legged pals and let them keep rambling on! If you're happy, your dog's happy, and y'all are enjoying your relationship with each other, then you’ve already won!

Veterinary holds with Porter and Morgan part. 2

A couple of weeks back our friends at Summitview Cowiche Vet Clinic showed us some helpful, common holds/positions to practice with your dog so they are more comfortable at the vet.

1. A**l glands/toenail trim Morgan is supporting Porter's body and head so another tech can work safely on expressing the a**l glands or a nail trim.

2. Ear Clean/exam Porter's snout and head is being supported firmly and thoughtfully so he's not squirming while his ears are cleaned and examined.

3. Jugular blood draw Making sure to get all his folds of skin out of the way, this is a common way to get a blood draw from the jugular.

4. Eye exam Supporting his head out snout so they can check his p*epers. 👀

It's a wonderful idea to practice these at home so it's less scary for your dog when they go to the vet.

Even the friendliest dogs can have a hard time at the vet, so getting them used to being handled this way makes it easier on the staff and your dog.

As always, HUGE thanks to Summitview Cowiche Vet Clinic and their staff for doing such an amazing job in the Yakima Valley taking care of our pets!

Remember folks, backyard breeders are very clever in how they market dogs. Any legit breeder will be upfront about how much the dog sheds and will be truthful about where the allergens come from.

Breeds that have less dander are: Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Bichon Frise, Maltese, and Schnauzers.

And yes, doodles DO shed. Trust me. I clean up their crates when they board. They absolutely shed because they are a mixed breed.

Now before anyone wants to throw a hissy fit, this isn't to bash on them. It's to educate. I see a lot of owners get taken advantage of in this and it's unfair to them AND the dog. I've seen so many doodles get re-homed because the family is still allergic after the "breeder" told them it was completely hypoallergenic. Also, the majority of doodles that I see have some serious behavior issues.

PLEASE do your research and find an ethical breeder if you plan on shopping for a new furry friend. A good breeder will pick out a puppy for you based on your needs and will turn you down if the breed isn't a good fit.

And remember, it's the proteins in the urine, dander and saliva that humans are allergic to. So unless that dog doesn't have skin, doesn't p*e or have any saliva there's no way they can be 100% hypoallergenic.

Border Collie and Aussie too. Not good for first time owners.

Border Collie and Aussie too. Not good for first time owners.

I know it's cute or cool looking, and maybe you know someone that has one or have seen some in movies or on Instagram that are well behaved. But you're not ready for that dog yet, and you don't realize the work that went into that good behavior.

There are many dog breeds that are just not for first time dog owners.

There are many breeds that just do not fit your personality or skill set. Dogs are not "one size fits all". Some of their temperaments can be strong willed and dangerous when left unchecked. Their size and strength can be too much for you to handle. You don't have an understanding of their instincts yet.

Do research on the breed you're considering. Give it serious thought and don't act based on the dog's looks alone or even on the other one you've seen somewhere.

Do some self examination, Do you have the fortitude to be the leader these dogs need?

Training for these dogs is a necessity, not a luxury and makes all the difference in the world to making a life with you successful.

*I would be happy to offer free advice if you want some insight on a breed you're considering.

Muzzled dogs are good dogs too!

Little Miss Nutmeg had her lesson around Naches the other day.
This sweet girl started off fearful of the entire world. Her family has been working on building her confidence more and more. She was so interested in all the new things around the neighborhood. She's now curious instead of cowering and barking in fear.
She's doing much better with crate training and having guests in the home.

Next up is her farm lesson!

Humans have a weird habit of sticking their hand right in a dog's face when they want to "have the dog smell them"...

Dogs have millions of scent receptors. The part of their brain that processes scent is 40% larger than ours. I promise you, they can smell you just fine from where you are.

Let's try to break this habit shall we? I don't know why it even started in the first place but could you imagine if we did it to each other? 🤣

Using PLAY to train.

What?! Yes, PLAY!🤯

Milo has a difficult time getting into the car. Part of the reason I have my playground for dogs is to get them used to new surfaces and using their back legs to get up. It can be scary for some dogs at first, but with some guidance, leash pressure and the other dogs around showing him it's fun to hop up on the playground he was up there in no time!

Part of bootcamp is the evaluation beforehand. I come to you, meet your dog, your family and come up with a custom training plan for them. I get to know your dog so when they come to camp it's not overwhelming for them. Building that relationship with you and your dog goes a long way to make their training successful.

All the other dogs here know the drill so it makes it easy for him to be around the pack. I even use the other dogs to help me train! My style is pretty different from a lot of trainers and I like it that way. Now, if Milo was here for dog aggression, obviously I wouldn't have him with the pack just yet, which is why training is tailored for each specific dog and their needs. 😊

Let's use some common sense people. Resource guarding can be a huge issue. Want to know how to stop it before it starts?

Set them up for success by feeding your dog in their crate and leaving them ALONE!

If I got bit by one of my dogs as a child for going into their crates and grabbing their food my dad would have said "that's what you get." Plain and simple.

There's no reason to bother your dog while they eat. Do you want to be bothered when you eat? Do you want someone snatching delicious tacos away from you? I didn't think so.

All my dogs and the dogs that come to me eat in their crates. They know the routine and wait politely for their meals. It helps with crate training and never gives them the opportunity to resource guard with me or each other. Same goes for things like bones and antlers. There's no reason to be taking them away.

A lot of issues with dogs can be completely avoided with simple management. Don't give them the opportunity to fail.

If you're having resource guarding issues, I'm more than happy to assist you, but for those that don't let's stop it before it even begins.

Let's give a big Hounds From Hell welcome to Milo!

Milo just checked in for doggie bootcamp. He's only 9 months old and weighs about 108 lbs. He's very unaware of his size and has picked up some naughty behaviors. Pawing, mouthing, pulling on the leash, thinking chickens are squeaky toys and playing to rough with his housemates.

We'll be addressing his behavior, mindset, obedience, socialization and exposure to new environments while he's here. We'll also be building up his confidence as he can be a little timid.

It's been a cool minute since I've worked with one of these house ponies, and I'm really excited to help him and his family out.

Stay tuned!

A little impulse control for the two divas. These ladies love to come barreling out of their crates at a million miles an hour so we're practicing having them lie down nicely before we go outside.

Gigi remembers this from when she was here last time, but Luna isn't a big fan, she was giving me some serious side eye. 👀😆

And before anyone wants to flip out, it's totally normal for dogs to be dramatic when you're setting rules and boundaries. Just like teenagers.

GriLKa and Sasha are both JMR dogs … GriLKa was adopted by our amazing trainer Karina at Hounds From Hell Training and Rehabilitation LLC and Sasha will go to her new forever family soon! They are both learning how to be the best dogs they can be and we are so proud of them!

We are so proud to be associated with trainers like Hounds From Hell Training and Rehabilitation LLC and RIOT Dog Training who help not only puppies like Sasha be more successful dogs, but who also help fosters and adopters be more successful pet parents. Sasha will learn so much and have so much fun hanging out on the farm and making new friends!
GriLKa is home! Her foster, Karina Espinoza from Hounds From Hell Training and Rehabilitation LLC and one of our board members decided she had the space, time, and resources to have GriLKa join her pack! We are so grateful to Karina for helping save her and giving her an amazing life!
Uhura was found as a stray - painfully thin but still so sweet. Thanks to Karina Espinoza from Hounds From Hell Training and Rehabilitation LLC, who agreed to foster her, she’s now found an amazing forever home where she can live her best life. We love happy new beginnings ❤️
Josie’s Misfit Ranch welcomes Hazel and Buckaroo to the pack! These 3-year-old Texas cattle dogs are also littermates, which can lead to Littermate Syndrome. When puppies from the same litter are adopted together it can lead to development behavior problems such as codependency and aggression. Many people don’t know about littermate syndrome and adopt puppies together thinking it will be easier for them to have a familiar playmate, when really it can be very detrimental. Hazel and Buckaroo had well meaning and loving humans, but due to an illness they could no longer keep their beloved dogs. Other rescues refused to take them because of behaviors associated with littermate syndrome. But thanks to our trainer from Hounds From Hell Training and Rehabilitation LLC we were able to assess them and determine we could help them. They are now in separate foster homes where they are learning to be confident individuals. They are sweet, loving and smart dogs who only needed someone to give them a chance. If you would like to donate to their care and training, please go to www.josiesmisfitranch.org.
Great advice from dog guru and friend of the ranch Karina at Hounds From Hell Training and Rehabilitation LLC!
Smitty unfortunately didn’t mesh well with his human sister so his adopted family had to return him (please no judgement they really tried to make it work and sometimes things just don’t). We love this boy so we’re happy to have him back at the ranch as are his girlfriends Josie and Sophie. We are so fortunate to have two excellent trainers including Bree and Karina Espinoza from Hounds From Hell Training and Rehabilitation LLC helping us work with these dogs so they can live their best lives. Smitty is a smart one and does really well with training!
Another serious day at the office.
Another success story! Thunder Buddy found a great home thanks to our friends at Hounds From Hell Training and Rehabilitation.
Thunder Buddy got his happy ending. 🖤🤘⚡🌩🐾
Thunder Buddy is doing so well with his foster mamma Karina from Hounds From Hell Training and Rehabilitation. If you would like to sponsor this amazing boy while he looks for his forever home, please donate at https://gofund.me/0daeb6f5

Please share my pal Thunder Buddy.🐾🐕
Meet 2 year old Thunder Buddy… the latest Misfit Ranch member. He will be fostered by our friends at Hounds From Hell Training and Rehabilitation after being picked up as a stray by the Humane Society. He’s staying with Karina at Hounds from Hell to work on separation anxiety and over excitement. He is the sweetest and friendliest guy who loves to love! He will need an active family for his energy and continued training. We will be posting an Amazon wish list soon to help support his needs while being fostered. In the meantime you can help by donating to his gofundme page here:
