Every year, millions of animals enter shelters and sanctuaries across the country, each carrying a unique story of hardship, resilience, and hope for a better future. In 2023, I rescued my pit bull mix, Nelson, from the local animal shelter where I volunteer. He had been brought in by animal control after being found wandering alone in a field—sunburned, infested with intestinal parasites, and severely underweight. Scars marked his head, evidence of prolonged abuse, and thick calluses on his elbows told the story of years spent lying on hard, unforgiving surfaces. Despite all he had endured, he was the most timid and withdrawn dog I had ever encountered. The moment he let his guard down and started trusting me, I realized I didn’t just want to help animals—I wanted to fight for them.
It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I share some devastating news about my best friend, Nelson.
Last week, we were told that Nelson has a tumor that is most likely a form of dermatological cancer. Hearing those words completely shattered our hearts. If you know me, then you know Nelson isn’t “just a dog.” He is my best friend, my family, my constant companion, and one of the greatest blessings God has ever given me.
The next step is surgery to remove the tumor and have it sent off for testing so we can get an accurate diagnosis and determine the best course of treatment. The surgery and associated costs are estimated to be around $3,000.
Right now, we are asking for your prayers above all else. Please pray that the surgery is successful, that the tumor can be completely removed, that the pathology results bring hopeful news, and that Nelson makes a smooth and speedy recovery. Please also keep our family in your prayers as we navigate this heartbreaking and uncertain time.
