Trainer tip: As the summer heat is now upon us, please be mindful of hot pavements. You may want to take your dog for a walk early in the morning or later in the evening, find a grassy area to walk on or play with your dog inside your home. Remember to check their paws for injury or debris after your walk.

Trainer tip: How can you help your dog stay cool in the summer heat? A dog’s cooling system is not like a human’s. Provide you dog with plenty of cool water. You should brush your dog regularly. Do not shave a dog who has a double coat and if you do, keep hair at least an inch in length in order to prevent sunburn and bug bites. These tips are based on the American Kennel Association’s guidelines.

Trainer tip: Dogs like toys. Some dogs like to chase so rubber balls are good. Dogs that like to chew need something durable. Soft toys are good for dogs who like to carry the toy with them. When your dog loses interest in a toy, put it away for awhile and bring it out again at a later date to renew interest.

Trainer tip from Denise VanSickle: When you begin to brush your pup’s teeth, it is best to take things slowly and make the brushing enjoyable. Make sure you and your dog are calm and in a quiet area. Going slow can mean maybe cleaning only a few teeth at first and then working up to the whole mouth. Teeth should be brushed every day, however, brushing 3-4 times a week will prove beneficial. You may also supplement with teeth cleaning treats between brushing days. Greenies and Whimzees are two of the most well known brushing treats and you should research which one is best for your pet. These brushing treats should be given under supervision due to possible choking. Place treats securely away as eating too many can become toxic.

Trainer Tip: Your pup needs to have his/her teeth brushed regularly. Periodontal disease has the potential to impact heart, liver and kidney functions. The best way to start is when your dog is young by getting them used to your hands being in their mouth. However, no matter the age of your dog, brushing teeth is of the upmost importance. The American Kennel Club suggests 12 steps to getting your dog used to having their teeth brushed no matter their age. See https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/how-brush-dog-teeth/ for more information.

Trainer tip from our trainer Denise VanSickle: One of the most overlooked grooming habits is brushing your canine’s teeth. Brushing is important because it cleans away the plaque that leads to bad breath or more serious problems such as decay teeth or gum disease. Periodontal disease also has the potential to impact heart liver and kidney function down the line so daily care is crucial for overall health.

goes to our Veteran Brother John Kukitz from Vet 2 Vet Service Dogs.

Today John is reppin while visiting Mike Murphy's Memorial at Penn State adjacent to Old Main. Mike Murphy is the only PSU alumni to receive the MOH. How fitting to visit this American Hero on Independence Day Weekend. 🇺🇲
