One of the most effective ways to stop a mouthy horse, or a horse that bites, is to back him up. Backing is a very humbling exercise for a horse to do. When a horse gets mouthy or tries to bite, it's a very forward action - he's invading your space and coming to get you. When you back him up, it's the opposite - he's being submissive to you by moving out of your space. – Clinton #ApplyTheMethod

“Until you walk trot, canter and gallop on a big loose rein with direction and purpose collection is a JOKE. It’s not collection, it’s containment for an insecure rider. Containment and paranoia. It’s pulling and holding and you’re just calling it collection to sound noble.” -Buck B.

When your horse is reactive, you need to be the exact opposite – soft and slow. You can’t teach a horse anything when he’s fighting to escape a situation. He has to be relaxed and receptive to learning. Relax your body language and slow down your cues and be softer. Think of being relaxed, soft and slow with your horse as starting a conversation with him rather than being tight, jerky and fast with your cues, which comes across as if you were hollering at him. – Clinton

Progress update on “Annie” the busy minded Tennessee Walker…she’s 6 weeks in now. I’ll keep her 2 more for some extra riding time. Lots of try and she wants to work and please. Transitions are the key to this one. Foundation=brakes…feather touch steering and a good gas pedal. She’s coming along.

Three weeks in and tons of progress on this very reactive Tennessee walker! She’s just forward forward forward…thought she hated plastic bags…didn’t want you to touch her face…or really be anywhere near her. Lots of desensitizing…lots of saddle time…much better.

It’s about time that I participate in the increasingly popular “Friday introductions”.

My name is Skeeter and I am the owner of 5SS Horsemanship and Method ambassador for Down Under Horsemanship. When I finally figured out what I want to be when I grew up, I realized that the Method was the best way to get there. I had found my passion, and in pursuit of that, I wanted information. The Method changed me and opened my mind in so many ways. It’s a curriculum based on fundamentals that is so easy to understand.

As an ambassador, I am not only passionate about training horses and watching them transform but also about imparting knowledge to their owners while helping them earn respect and build a partnership with their horse. Once the proper foundation is built, the sky is the limit!

Feel free to share my page with any of your friends who may be looking to develop in their horsemanship or need assistance in the training of their equine. #5sshorsemanship #themethod #downunderhorsemanship #downunderambassador

How you begin each day with your horse, from the moment you approach his stall or pasture, sets the tone for the training session ahead. Just as important, how you end each day reinforces the day’s lessons and your horse’s connection to you.

There’s an often repeated horsemanship saying that goes, “The last thing you do with your horse today is the first thing he’ll remember tomorrow.” It’s absolutely true. If your horse is calm, tuned in to you and working well, that’s the frame of mind you’ll find him in the next session. On the other hand, if your horse is fearful, upset or worried, that’s where he’ll pick up when you go to work with him again.

It should be every horseman’s goal to begin and end each day with their horse so that he’s in a relaxed frame of mind, using the thinking side of his brain and is soft and supple. Here’s how I ensure that happens with my horses. – Clinton

Don't ruin excellence in the pursuit of perfection. You have to learn how to read when a horse can’t make more improvement, meaning you’ve maxed out his ability. If you keep pushing a horse that’s reached his ability level, he’ll get frustrated and often will regress. There’s a fine line between knowing when a horse is chumping you and not putting in effort and when he’s truly given you all he has. Telling the difference comes with experience and working with a variety of horses. - Clinton #ApplyTheMethod
