To the person who threw Nova away like she was nothing: I hope you understand what you did to her.
You had options. There is absolutely no excuse for a one-year-old dog to be found in the condition Nova was in.
Nova was a body condition score of 1 out of 9. She was severely emaciated, painfully matted, and covered in her own urine and f***s. Her body was shutting down, and her liver was failing. She was so close to death.
Today, Nova is fighting to recover from the suffering she endured. She is on liver medication, requires regular blood draws, needs special supplements, and is following a carefully managed refeeding protocol to help her body recover safely. Her road ahead is not going to be easy, and the damage done to her little body will not disappear overnight.
But here is what I want you to know.
Nova is safe now.
She has food in her belly. She has a warm foster home. She has people watching over her, fighting for her, and making sure she gets the medical care she desperately needs. She is loved. She is no longer being left to suffer alone.
You were supposed to be her person. You were supposed to protect her, provide for her, and be her voice when she couldn’t speak for herself. Instead, you left us to pick up the pieces of her shattered health and fight to give her a chance at the life she should have had all along.
If you could no longer care for her, you had options. You could have contacted a rescue. You could have surrendered her to a shelter. You could have asked for help. There were places that could have taken her long before she reached this point.
Instead, she was discarded at the curb like a piece of garbage.
But Nova is not garbage. She never was. She is worthy of love, care, dignity, and a chance to live.
To everyone reading this, please understand that if you can no longer care for your pet, there is no shame in asking for help. Life happens. Circumstances change. There are resources, shelters, and rescues that may be able to help you find a safe solution.
But please, PLEASE, do not abandon them. Do not leave them to starve, suffer, or slowly die because you don’t know what else to do. Even surrendering them to a shelter with limited resources would have given Nova a chance to receive help before her body began shutting down.
Nova deserved better. Every animal does.
Now, we will do everything we can to give her the future she was so cruelly denied. We will celebrate every ounce gained, every improvement in her bloodwork, and every small victory along the way.
She has a long road ahead, but she will never have to walk it alone.
You may have given up on Nova, but we haven’t.
