April is Heartworm Awareness Month- heartworm disease is a completely preventable disease that unfortunately still runs rampant in the United States and even in other countries. According to the American Heartworm Society’s last incidence map in 2022, Indiana sees a yearly average of 26-50 cases PER CLINIC in the largest affected areas. In 2024, Care Animal Hospital diagnosed a total of 28 cases of heartworm disease.

One of those cases was a patient named Leo, who initially presented for vomiting, lethargy, inappetence, seizures, and coughing. Leo had not been heartworm tested within the last year and was not current on heartworm prevention. A heartworm test was sent to the lab and unfortunately, the test came back positive. A treatment plan was formulated and presented to the owner who consented to treat Leo.

Care Animal Hospital follows the American Heartworm Association's guidelines for treating heartworms, which is a 4-month long process done in 30-day increments that clears the infestation as safely as possible.

Leo started to feel better after the treatment was started and continued to get better after every visit. The difference in his demeanor between the first visit and the end of his treatment was truly night and day. He is now heartworm free and protected with ProHeart 12, and his owner is so thrilled to have her healthy, happy Leo back!

We are fortunate to have a treatment for heartworm disease that does work well, but prevention is always the best method! The American Heartworm Association recommends keeping your pets on heartworm prevention year-round (yes, even in the winter!) and making sure to test yearly. Now through June you can get $20 off of a 6-month supply of Simparica Trio here in hospital, or $40 off of 12 months- on top of your Zoetis rewards!

Thank you for trusting Care with the treatment of your best friend, Alli! 🐾

One of our favorite Muncie Animal Care & Services seniors was adopted recently after 8 months in the shelter and paid us a visit this morning! Dorothy had some skin issues and very dry, gunky eyes when she first arrived at MACS, and we were lucky enough to help her get healthy. We loved seeing her improve at every visit and are so happy for both her and her new family!! Enjoy your new life, sweet Dorothy! 🐾

We have a great update on Benny, the sweet boy from Muncie Animal Care and Services. Today, Dr. Hobson and Dr. Seabeck completed his much needed FHO procedure, which will hopefully help him regain his ability to walk normally!

Post operative radiographs look great! You can see the empty socket in his left hip, which is exactly how we want it to look. Benny is headed back home with his foster mom to continue his journey on the road to recovery!

Today we wanted to introduce you to a special little guy named Benny!

Benny was brought in by the shelter after being picked up as a stray, believed to have been hit by a car. Upon arriving at Care two weeks ago he was underweight, unable to walk, had bruising, road rash, and several necrotic wounds. When we took radiographs we found that he also had a fractured femur.

A technician here at Care offered to take Benny home to foster, and the decision was made to focus on healing up his wounds and retake his radiographs in two weeks to assess how the break was looking, and if he was a candidate for a procedure called a femoral head ostectomy. In a femoral head ostectomy (or FHO), the broken or damaged head of the femur is removed entirely leaving an empty hip socket, and over time this allows the muscle and scar tissue to create what we call a “false joint” and support the leg. This procedure is most successful in cats and smaller dogs under about 45lbs, and luckily for Benny he will likely be around 35lbs at a healthy weight.

Over the last two weeks, Benny has gained a huge amount of strength, four pounds, and his wounds are healing beautifully. He is able to support himself on his right leg and has even begun picking up the fractured left leg when walking. His foster mom keeps him supported in a sling when walking outside to go potty and tries to around the house, but he’s been feeling so good he scoots around the house on his own pretty freely! His repeat radiographs looked good on Monday, and he is officially on the surgery schedule with Dr. Hobson next week. He will have about 6 weeks of recovery after the procedure and then eventually be available for adoption!

We are so happy we could help give Benny his best chance at a full recovery, and our friends at Muncie Animal Care & Services would be so appreciative of any donations towards his care. If you feel so inclined, donations can be made directly here at Care Animal Hospital in person or via phone, and at the shelter in person or through their Venmo account, .

Send all your positive thoughts for Benny in his procedure next week!

Oatsy wanted to remind everyone that he is still in search of a forever home, we just hit his official one year mark of boarding here at Care. 😔 Today, though, we’re celebrating the happy occasion of Oatsy’s 11th birthday!!

Oatsy has been boarding with us since February of 2024 when his owner had to move to assisted living and was unable to bring him along. He is full of personality and would do best as the only pet in the home, as he has always been king of the castle! He is on a prescription urinary diet which he loves and eats very well.

Oatsy is incredibly loved and his owner would be so thrilled to find him a new home of his own to enjoy his golden years in!
