We love to hear that our pet owners have had a great experience during such a stressful time. This sweet hyperthyroid cat was with us for 7 full days in radiation isolation and got to go home on Sunday. Ginger's owner left us the following amazing google review:

This sweet but extra spicy lady is spending a week with us and is doing great. We love her grumpy expression far more than she loves us, but she is doing very well after her I-131 nuclear therapy for hyperthyroidism.

She is so lucky that her vet caught this early and before significant damage to her organs started. Her coat still looks healthy, and she is still a healthy weight in spite of the suspicious vomiting that made her owner get her checked out.

Remember, 11% of cats over 7 years old are hyperthyroid and it shortens their life span significantly. Please ask your vet to check your cat's thyroid levels and treat this condition before the damage to the heart and lungs begins.

Please make sure your cats are on tick prevention and keep them indoors if at all possible!

Attention Cat Lovers:

Bobcat fever, or cytauxzoonosis, is a deadly disease in domestic cats caused by the parasite Cytauxzoon felis. It is primarily transmitted through tick bites, particularly from the Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum). The disease is named "bobcat fever" because bobcats are the natural reservoir for the parasite, but they usually do not suffer severe illness from it.

Key Facts:
1) Deadly and Fast-Acting – Bobcat fever progresses rapidly and is often fatal if not treated early. Infected cats can die within a few days of showing symptoms.
2) Transmission Through Ticks – The primary vector is the Lone Star tick, which is common in Arkansas and other southeastern states.
3) Cats cannot catch it from other cats.
4) Symptoms Appear Suddenly– Infected cats may show:
High fever
Lethargy
Loss of appetite
Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
Difficulty breathing
4) High Mortality Rate – Without treatment, the mortality rate is over 90%, but with early veterinary intervention, survival rates improve.
5) No Vaccine Available – There is currently no vaccine, so tick prevention is the best defense.
6) More Common in Spring & Summer – Because tick activity is highest in warm months, cases peak in April–September in Arkansas.
7) Treatment is Intensive – Nationwide, 60% of cats survive with intensive veterinary care. At All Creatures Veterinary Hospital, 80% of our cats survive on our intensive care protocol.

How to Protect Your Cat:
Use vet-approved tick prevention (topical or oral treatments).
Keep cats indoors to reduce exposure to ticks.
Check for ticks daily if your cat goes outside.
Maintain a tick-free yard by mowing grass and reducing wildlife
activity.

Bobcat fever is a major threat to outdoor cats in our region, so prevention is key. If a cat shows symptoms, immediate vet care is crucial for any chance of survival.

This is the absolute best part of having this wonderful facility. Our cat owners are always thrilled to have their cats recover from hyperthyroidism after I-131 therapy. Marti was very ill when she came to us, and this was her last hope. We're so happy for her, and the socks are too cool!

We're thrilled to be able to provide this therapy in Mountain Home, Arkansas at our new Veterinary Nuclear Therapy Center. Our clients and their pets have been able to treat hyperthyroidism in our comfortable new facility without driving several hours each way to drop off and pick up their cats.

Has your cat suddenly lost weight? If you haven't changed your cat's diet, it could be hyperthyroidism. It is very common over the age of 7, and often times other symptoms may be harder to spot. Please ask your vet to check your cat's thyroid hormones if they're less fluffy than usual.

We had the pleasure of treating this sweet boy this week and he has made such improvement since he received his I-131 treatment for hyperthyroidism. By day 2, he seemed much more comfortable, and by the fifth day he was a different cat. They say the maximum effect is up to 6 months after therapy, but the relief of symptoms happens so quickly. Their little bodies are just exhausted, so it is amazing to watch the transformation.

We see so many skinny, sick cats with organ damage from advancing hyperthyroidism. Please ask your vet to check a T4 level if your cat is over 7. You can catch this disease before the heart and kidneys suffer and before your cat loses a significant amount of weight. If your cat is suddenly much smaller or you can easily feel their spine and ribs, get them checked! Hyperthyroidism is very common and shortens the life span of your cat significantly. Bring them to me for treatment before they're so sick and they'll do so much better!
