A few weeks ago, we asked if any one would be interested in us taking questions from followers that you may have always wanted to ask a veterinarian. We got a good response from several saying that they would like us to do something like that. Therefore, we want more opinions! How would you prefer this information to be presented? Let us know in the comments!

We will likely try to do this at least once every other week, but our goal is weekly.

After careful consideration, we have decided that we must close to new patients/clients at this time. This is to ensure that we continue to provide the highest level of care to our current patients. We are also going to take some time to do some restructuring of our current systems, more training of employees, and make steps towards a mobile surgical/dental unit.

This doesn't apply to euthanasias. We will continue to provide euthanasias to non-clients as we are able.

Additionally, if we have already been speaking with you about possibly scheduling, we will continue those discussions, and we will consider you a client on a case-by-case basis.

This will likely be a temporary change, but we have no way to determine the timeframe.

Thank you for the level of support you have shown this business! We have been overjoyed to serve this community in this capacity and look forward to continuing!

Do you have a dog that you are thinking of rehoming due to behavior? It may be worth reaching out to these organizations regarding free training!

We don't know all the specifics, but it appears that it is open to Williamson, Maury, and Cheatham County residents and to find out more information you speak to the animal shelters in those counties.

Let's keep dogs out of the shelters and in loving homes!

We love the diversity of our appointments! Yesterday, we trimmed some hooves on a goat herd!

It is often overlooked, but many goats need regular hoof trimming. It really depends on the environment, diet, and genetics they have. Goats with a rocky environment tend to wear down their hoof wall well. While other goats have genetic conditions that make their hooves grow at awkward angles. They can also get conditions such as foot rot.

It's important to check your goat's and sheep's hooves regularly to ensure that they are healthy. Overgrown hooves can lead to poor health due to improper movement and balance causing joint pain which can furthermore cause decreased weight gain, milk production, and reproductive success.

Let us know if you need to schedule an appointment for your herd by calling/texting (931-797-4054), email ([email protected]), or our appointment request form (saltandlighthousecallvet.com).

We love all animals at Salt and Light House Call Veterinarian. However, Dr. Ashlee has a special connection with Blue Heelers (because she owns two!). So, this appointment with 4 Blue Heelers is always a highlight! (Not all are pictured because its difficult to herd herding animals. 🤣)

Let's see pictures of you and your favorite breeds!

Yesterday was World Spay day!

From the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)
Why spay or neuter?
Although progress has been made in recent years, millions of unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized each year, including puppies and kittens. The good news is that you can make a difference.

By having your pet spayed or neutered, you will do your part to prevent the birth of unwanted animals. What's more, you could be setting your pet up for a longer life, as studies have repeatedly shown that spayed or neutered dogs and cats live longer, on average, than other dogs and cats. This advantage is likely due to the health and behavioral benefits of the procedures.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Established health benefits include protection against some potentially serious diseases. Spaying female dogs and cats can prevent uterine infection and reduce the risk of breast cancer. Neutering males can eliminate their risk of testicular cancer and reduce their risk of developing enlarged prostate glands (known as benign prostatic hyperplasia).

BEHAVIORAL BENEFITS

Behavioral benefits relate directly to the decreases in certain s*x hormones that occur after spaying or neutering. Removing a female dog or cat's ovaries eliminates their heat cycles and generally reduces mating-related behaviors that may frustrate owners. Removing a male dog or cat's testicles reduces their breeding instinct, resulting in less roaming and fewer urine-marking behaviors.

Let's talk about Toxic Plants! Flip through this list of common household plants to learn about their toxicity.
*Vomiting isn't a symptom for horses.

Save this Life Microchip, which our clinic and hundreds of other clinics uses, has suddenly and without notice shut down. The URGENT issue for you as a pet owner, is that they have unlinked their database from the national registries.

Currently (if your pet were to become lost), there is NO way for any shelter or veterinary hospital to find your information. You must register your pet's microchip with a new company.

We have contacted all of our clients who received this microchip from us. However, if your pet was microchipped elsewhere, we highly recommend finding out if it was this brand of microchip. We are also planning to switch to a different microchip company for the future.

Microchip registration options:

Exciting news! We have invested in a laser and look forward to using it to provide even better care to our patients.

What is laser therapy?
Also known as soft laser, laser therapy is a form of phototherapy used to stimulate tissue repair and provide pain management. The laser uses focused red and infrared light to stimulate tissue at and below the surface of your pet’s skin.

The biochemical effect of the low-level light increases the production of cellular energy and thus promotes cellular regeneration, production of collagen for tissue repair, and vascular dilation and synthesis for better circulation. Light from the low-level laser also encourages production of the body’s natural pain-relievers.

What conditions is it helpful for?
Arthritis Flare-ups, Ear infections, wound healing, stomatitis (painful dental condition in cats), cystitis (bladder inflammation), and many more!

If you think your pet could benefit, please ask us for more information!
