My name is Dawn Kettler and I have been working specifically with training dogs since 2018. However, my training career started back in 2009 as a zoo keeper at Busch Gardens, Tampa, working with lions, hyenas, lemurs and a variety of other zoo animals. I transitioned to the World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park, MO training a variety of birds of prey to be in bird shows and was also employed by Gran

t’s Farm to train and speak in their animal show. Olive that I began working with dogs. My training techniques stem from what I have learned from my time with exotic animals as well as from seminars and classes on dog training. My training methods focus on positive reinforcement and teaching owners the importance of setting a dog up to achieve success. Did you know?
We do a lot of training with puppies but that's not all we do! There is no age limit that prevents a dog from learning new skills. We've even had dogs as old as 10 years old come for training! And while majority of clients are looking for obedience skills, we can also help with reactivity while on walks, fears, resource guarding, and connect with your veterinarian for behaviors linked to medical conditions. If you're not sure if we cover your problem simply reach out! We are happy to help. A few pics below show some DK9 graduates who were no longer puppies when they came to training!

Keep your pets warm!

Outdoor, guardian breed type dogs such as Great Pyrs, St. Bernard’s, etc with heavy coats would be best kept in a cool place such as a garage with an electric heat source of some sort. Drastically going from the cold to a warm house when the dog has a heavy coat can also be hard on them. FOR ALL OTHER DOGS BEING INSIDE IS THE BEST PLACE FOR THEM PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY. Many dogs do not self regulate well, especially young ones. Even if they enjoy the cold they will not protect themselves against frostbite until it has already become harmful and painful. As a pet owner it is your responsibility to protect your pet.

If you need help keeping your pet warm please reach out to DK9 Training. We have crates that can be rented and used to keep a pet safely inside. They can be picked up by appointment. If you know or see someone keeping their pet outside please reach out to them to offer assistance or direct them to us. Additionally, calling the police and asking them to perform a wellness check on an animal can also be beneficial, but should be a last resort.

We hope this information provides assistance to help pets through the winter. Please stay warm!

When you notice neighbors with pets that remain outside throughout the night in freezing temperatures please address the situation with kindness. It’s the best route to take for the pet. Before going straight to the authorities try to be neighborly and approach the owner directly. If you prefer to be non confrontational, there is a comment under this post with a letter that can be copy and pasted into a document and printed to be placed in a door or mailbox.

Outdoor, big dogs (great Pyrs, St. Bernard’s, etc) with heavy coats would be best kept in a cool place such as a garage with a heat source. Drastically going from the cold to a warm house when the dog has a heavy coat can also be hard on them. For all others, being inside is the safest, and best, place to be physically and emotionally.
