Today we remember the dogs we would give anything to have one more day with.

The ones whose collars are still tucked away somewhere.

Whose favorite toy you could never quite bring yourself to throw out.

Whose name still comes up in stories years later.

The dogs who grew up beside us, got us through difficult seasons, made ordinary days better, and left our homes feeling much quieter when they were gone.

They may only be with us for part of our lives, but somehow they become part of nearly every memory from the years we had together.

Today, on Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, we are remembering all of them.

What’s in our dog beach bag?

A beach day with your dog is hard to beat, but a little preparation makes it a lot more fun for everyone.

Here are a few things we never want to forget:

Fresh water and a travel bowl:
Do not rely on ocean or lake water. Bring more fresh water than you think you will need.

A floating toy:
Toys like the West Paw Zwig and Sailz are easy to spot, made for active play, and float for water retrieves.

Leash or long line
Even dogs with great recall can get distracted by wildlife, waves, other dogs, or people.

A durable ID tag

Toy Safety Series #1: Choosing the Right Size

Choosing the right toy size is one of the simplest ways to make playtime safer, but it is also more complicated than just reading the weight chart.

Weight is a good starting point.

It should not be the only thing you consider.

Two dogs can weigh the same and have completely different mouths, jaw shapes, chewing strength, and play styles.

Here are three things we look at when helping someone choose a size.

1. Size shared toys for the largest dog in the household
If you have multiple dogs, think about every dog who may have access to the toy.

A toy that is appropriately sized for a small dog may become a problem if a much larger dog picks it up.

For shared toys, we generally recommend sizing with the largest dog in mind.

2. Power chewers may benefit from sizing up
For dogs that sit down and methodically chew, going larger can provide another advantage.

A larger toy can be more difficult for the dog to position on the rear teeth, where they can apply some of their greatest chewing force.

That does not make a toy indestructible, but it can make the toy harder to really bear down on.

3. Do not judge safety by dimensions alone
A 3-inch ball is not automatically the same as every other 3-inch ball.

Manufacturers approach safety differently.

Some use airflow grooves or channels designed to help maintain airflow while the toy is being carried deep in the mouth.

Others reduce risk by making the toy large enough that it should not fit far enough back in the mouth in the first place.

Shape, grooves, openings, cross-section, and overall design all matter.

So when we recommend a toy, we are not just looking at the number printed on the package.

We are looking at the dog and the way the toy was engineered.

The best starting point is always the manufacturer's sizing guide.

Then consider:
* The largest dog with access to the toy
* Mouth and head size
* Chewing strength
* Play style
* Shape and design of the toy
* Built-in safety features

When in doubt, we would rather help you size it before you order.

Why doesn’t DogTuff carry every dog toy brand?

Because we don’t think more choices automatically mean better choices. There are thousands of dog toys on the market.

We could add hundreds more products to the website, but that has never been the goal.

Every toy we carry has to earn its place.

Before we add something new, we look at the things that actually matter when a dog gets hold of it.

- Is it made from materials we are comfortable recommending?
- Does the construction make sense for the way the toy is supposed to be used?
- Is the sizing appropriate?
- Are there unnecessary pieces that could become a problem?
-Does it offer something useful that we do not already have?

And one of the biggest questions:
-Would we confidently give it to our own dogs?

Sometimes the answer is yes.

Sometimes it is no.

And sometimes a product looks promising, but after we see it in person or learn more about it, we decide it is not the right fit for DogTuff.

We are especially careful about safety because that has been part of DogTuff from the beginning.

- Durability matters.
- Where and how a toy is made matters.
- Construction matters.

But none of those things matter more than feeling comfortable recommending the toy to another dog owner.

That is also why we do not believe there is one “best” toy.

A product that is perfect for a Lab that lives for fetch may be completely wrong for a Pittie that wants to sit down and methodically chew.

Our job is not to give you the biggest wall of toys possible.

It is to help make finding the right one easier.

So no, we do not carry every brand.

And that is very intentional.

DogTuff Kitchen: Berry Back-to-School Toppl

Back-to-school schedules can get hectic fast.

One thing we like about food-based enrichment is that a few minutes of prep the night before can give your dog something interesting to work on the next day.

This one is simple.

-Berry Toppl-

You’ll need:
* Plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt
* A few blueberries
* Finely chopped strawberries
* A small amount of xylitol-free peanut butter
* Your dog’s regular kibble, optional
* An appropriately sized West Paw Toppl

Start with a small layer of kibble.

Mix the yogurt with a few blueberries and chopped strawberries, then spoon it into the Toppl.

Finish with a light swirl of peanut butter.

Place it upright in the freezer overnight.

The next day, you have a ready-to-go enrichment activity that encourages licking and makes your dog work a little longer for the same ingredients they could have finished quickly from a bowl.

A chewed shoe.

A shredded pillow.

A dog pacing around the house looking for something, anything, to do.

Sometimes what looks like a behavior problem is really a dog creating their own entertainment.

Dogs naturally want to chew, sniff, chase, carry, lick, dig, and solve problems.

When we don't give them appropriate ways to do those things, they may find their own.

The goal isn't to entertain your dog every minute of the day.

It's to give them a few good outlets for the things they already want to do.

Watch for the pattern

Boredom can show up as:

* Pacing or restlessness
* Repeatedly bringing you toys
* Barking for attention
* Stealing household items
* Digging at beds or furniture
* Suddenly chewing things they normally ignore
* Becoming restless around the same time every day

Once you notice the pattern, think about what your dog may actually be looking for.

Match the activity to the need

If your dog wants to chew, give them an appropriate chew.

If they want to sniff, try a treat search or a slower sniffing walk.

If they want to chase, a short game of fetch may be exactly what they need.

If they want to work for food, bring out a puzzle or enrichment toy.

Instead of asking:
“How do I stop this?”

Try asking:
What appropriate activity meets the same need?”

Keep it simple

How does a dog toy actually earn a place at DogTuff?

It starts long before we put it on the website.

There are thousands of dog toys available, and we're not interested in carrying all of them.

We're interested in finding the ones we'd feel comfortable giving to our own dogs.

That means the first question isn't:
“How tough is it?”

It's:
“Is it safe for the way it's intended to be used?”

We look at the materials.

We look at the construction.

We look at sizing.

We look for small pieces that could become hazards.

With plush toys, we'll look at things like stitched or embroidered features, reinforced seams, liners, and how easily internal material could become exposed.

With balls and rubber toys, sizing and design matter just as much as durability. We pay attention to whether the toy is appropriately sized for the dog and whether the design makes sense for the type of play it was built for.

Then comes the fun part.

We look at how dogs actually use it.

Does it bounce the way we expected?

Does it float?

Is it easy to pick up?

Does the dog immediately understand how to play with it?

Does it work better for fetch, tug, chewing, enrichment, or carrying?

And sometimes the biggest question is simply:

Would we give this to our own dogs?

If the answer is no, it doesn't matter how good the packaging looks.

It doesn't make the cut.

That doesn't mean every toy we carry is indestructible.

There is no single toy that's perfect for every dog.

The goal is finding the right toy for the right dog and the right play style.

That is the standard behind every recommendation we make.
