🍂SEPTEMBER PETS OF THE MONTH🍂

Our September Pets of the Month are two beautiful German Shepherds, Dzuki and Luka! Dzuki is a sweet girl who just wants pets and treats, while Luka is a big goof who likes to patrol the yard and mess with Dzuki. We asked their mom to send us a little bio for them:

"Dzuki and Luka are rescues that came from the Virginia German Shepherd Rescue in 2018 and 2022. Dzuki likes to socialize, but she never neglects her duty of barking at those who need to be barked at, namely all dogs and pedestrians. She is SO EXCITED about the cat. Sadly, this affection is unrequited. Luka is a good dog with a big boy bark who sometimes makes questionable decisions. Although they are both named after Croatian soccer players, Luka is the only one who likes to chase a ball. Like most Shepherds, he keeps possession until you show him you're really on his team by offering to throw the next thing.

They both like coming to Sunny Ridge Kennels. They are comfortable, safe, and have fun while they are at SRK. I am especially grateful that SRK isn't fooled by Luka's tough guy act, and also doesn't let him get away with anything."

Thank you, Elizabeth, for trusting us with your babies! Dzuki is always a love bug, and we know that Luka is all bark (if I needed a guard dog though, he would be my first pick!). 😋🐾

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our sweet Tasia! 🎉🥳 She's our selfie queen, fellow Aussie lover, and our #1 jokester. She has the biggest heart for caring for your pets, and we're SO thankful to have her on our team. 💛🐾 We hope you have the best day, Tay!

Recently we had 3 dogs named Maddie B. AT THE SAME TIME 🤯 We called them Maddie, Big Maddie and Little Maddie. They're all so different and so cute 💛🐾

Happy FriYAY! Mabel got plenty of attention last week, how could we not?! She's one of the cutest lil wiener dog puppies we've had and she did great her first time boarding! 💜🐾

OBI WAS ADOPTED!!! 🥲🎉 After nearly a year at Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA Obi went home last week, and now he pretty much has a twin brother, too! We are so happy for Obi and thankful to the SPCA and his new family for giving him a chance. 💛 Thank you all for sharing and following along! 🐾

When people learn our capacity is about 70 dogs, they usually say SEVENTY? Like 7-0? 🤯

Yes, we have 70 kennels at our house! Our main building has 30 kennels and the "big dog" building has 40. A few are used for storage (and right now, AC units) but overall we can handle about 70 dogs and 9 cats. One time, we had so many pairs sharing kennels that we had 78 dogs for a weekend!

That being said, it's a lot of dogs to care for, so of course we have help. We have 6 part-time staff who help us every day, twice a day for several hours, and we couldn't do this without them and still say sane. They are all angels and we're lucky to have such a wonderful team! Skylar also helps with the office, and Gregory helps with maintenance (mowing, fixing fences, painting, etc.)

Each dog (and cat) gets the kind of attention they need. Some want to run zoomies in the yard for as long as possible, some want to snuggle in our laps, some want to play ball. Some pretend we don't exist and will only go back to their kennel when they are ready, and that's fine, too. Some dogs eat like they've never seen food before, while others are too nervous to eat and need to be hand-fed, or sat next to so they feel safe. They're all different, and we love them all. 💛

We don't always have 70 — right now we have 45 dogs and 1 cat. It fluctuates based on the season, and right now summer is winding down. It'll start cooling down soon, too (YAY!) so everyone will get to spend more time outside. We'll have time to slow down and work on projects we're too busy for in the summer — power washing and resealing the outdoor runs, de-cluttering our office, painting, etc. The kennels were built in 1985, so there's always something to fix!

Thank you guys for trusting us with your pets. We know it's not easy leaving them with someone, or somewhere, but we take pride in paying special attention to each one, even when we have 70. 💛 🐾

☀️AUGUST PET OF THE MONTH ☀️

Our August Pet of the Month is the goodest boy, Jack! His hobbies at the kennel include lounging outside all day, refusing to come inside, and giving us the best puppy dog eyes until we add wet food to his meals. We asked Jack's dad to send us a little bio for him:

"Jack is a nine year old border collie that I adopted in 2018. He had been found as a stray and brought to the local SPCA, where everyone fell in love with him. A friend of mine sent me a video of Jack that she captioned “Look at this cute dog!”, and even though I wasn’t really looking for a dog at the time I immediately knew I wanted him, and a couple hours later Jack and I walked out the SPCA’s doors. He’s been my constant companion ever since! Jack loves people more than anything, and wants nothing more than to get scratched by everyone he encounters. He also loves going for hikes and seems to love a good view, and would spend the entire day playing fetch til he could! Jack’s best trick is being able to roll over on command, and his best friend is my cat, Ghost. Jack gets visibly excited when we turn down Sunny Ridge Kennel’s road, and I’m very thankful for Katie, Dustin, and their crew for always taking such great care of him!"

Happy FriYAY from the tallest Great Dane we've had yet! Dunkin is just over a year old and he's already HUGE... he can stand up in his kennel and his paws reach the top. He stayed with us last year as a puppy (last pic) and when he got out of the car this time we said OMG 😂 He's the best boy and seemed to remember our routine, and this time he brought his brother and sister along 💛🐾
