Do you have a hard keeper?

Here are a few simple (but effective!) recommendations to help start to improve their body condition:

✅ Teeth check: Get your horse’s teeth evaluated by a reputable equine dentist every 6-12 months. Dental issues like hooks and ramps can make chewing and breaking down food difficult, making it hard for the body to absorb nutrients.

✅ Provide 24/7 access to forage. Horses that spend parts of the day or night on an empty stomach can start to develop ulcers and anxiety, which can cause them to become hard keepers.

✅ Consider adding alfalfa. Alfalfa is high in protein and calories, which aid in weight gain and muscle development. Alfalfa is also high in calcium, which not only supports bone health but helps buffer stomach acid. Adjust the amount based on your horse's weight, and be sure to introduce slowly like all new feeds and forages.

✅ Evaluate your horse’s stress level. Stress from training, hauling, being in a stall, missing buddy horses, antibiotics, and more can disrupt the balance of microbial populations in the gut. An unbalanced gut can cause a horse to become a hard keeper, even if they’re getting enough to eat.
