Sometimes, visits aren't fun, but we're glad we can be there. Last week's sudden storm had poor little L shaking and afraid of the outside. After a quick necessary potty break, I consoled her with some comforting snuggles and massage and she fell asleep in my arms.

🌟 Does your pet wear an ID tag all the time?
🌟Are they microchipped, and is the chip registered and updated with your current information?
🌟If your pet escaped accidentally, how would you get them back?

This is Chico. Chico and his brother were running loose in the street near a very busy intersection by my house. I was able to park safely off the road and called to them in a happy-sounding voice to let them know I was friendly and fun. I crouched down to make myself smaller and less threatening, and I let them come to me, rather than approach them at full height, which likely would have scared them further out into traffic. When they came to me I was able to grab their collars and lead them to my car. Once we were all safely contained inside the vehicle, I could see that they were wearing tags with their name, phone number, and address. I looked up the address and found that it was only two blocks away, and so I was easily able to drive them back home. They were with me for a total of five minutes.

If they had not been wearing their tags, I would have had to call the police or animal control, and they likely would have spent the night in a shelter until their owner could be located.

If your baby got out, how would YOU get them back?

Only seven African-Americans are known to be veterinary graduates at Cornell University between 1910 and 1920. This information was discovered in 2010-11, when a research student realized that previously accepted university reports omitted African-American graduates.

The seven graduates were:
Kirksey Curd (the first African American to receive a DVM from Cornell in 1912)
Garrett Singleton
Ray Potter Waller
Owen Waller, Jr.
W.H. Seabrook
Abram J. Jackson Jr.

Jane Hinton (1919-2003) was the co-developer of Mueller-Hinton agar (published in 1941) when she was working in Harvard as a laboratory technician. Mueller-Hinton agar is a culture medium in which bacteria can thrive. It has become one of the standard methods used to test bacterial resistance to antibiotics. In 1942 she joined the War Department, serving as a laboratory technician in Arizona. After the war, she studied veterinary medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She was awarded her doctor’s degree in veterinary medicine in 1949 – the co-first African-American woman veterinarian. (Alfreda Johnson Webb was the other, graduating from Tuskegee Institute that year.) Hinton worked first as a small animal veterinarian, and later studying and responding to livestock epidemics for the federal government.
