April showers bring May flowers! Spring is FINALLY here and we are rounding out the month by spreading the word about Heartworm Awareness! 💐
What is heartworm disease? Heartworm disease is a serious disease for our pets, especially dogs. Heartworms are worms that live in the heart, lungs and associated vessels. They can be up to 1 foot long! 🪱 Heartworm disease can cause heart failure, lung disease and damage to other organs in the body. This damage can affect the animal’s health and quality of life long after the parasites are gone.
Dogs are a natural host for heartworms, which means that the heartworms can live inside the dog, maturing into adults, mating, and producing offspring. Meanwhile, cats are an atypical host for heartworms, meaning most worms in a cat do not survive to the adult life stage. 🐶 🐱
Why do we recommend heartworm prevention? Heartworm disease has been reported in all 50 states. Transmission occurs through the bite of an infected mosquito. Where there are mosquitoes, there is a year round risk for heartworm disease, even in the cold winter months. Transmission is as simple as one mosquito bite. Heartworm prevention is a safe and effective way to protect your dogs from this disease. 🦟 ❤️🩹
