Just sharing for the broader horse community in Minnesota. I feel like most of us know how fantastic horses are as community liaisons, regardless of your feelings towards police. For a lot of people, this may be one of the few exposures to a live horse that they have.

Hope everyone has a peaceful Memorial Day. Thanks to everyone that has gone to battle for us including the horses.

Good trail manners make for great trail memories! 🌲🐴 Whether you’re riding with friends, family, or a larger group, these simple tips help keep horses, riders, and other trail users safe while making the ride more enjoyable for everyone:
❤ Condition horses and provide appropriate hoof care for the ride and terrain
✅ Check tack fit and condition regularly
📱Carry a cell phone, trail map, and basic first aid kits
⛑️ Encourage helmets — especially for youth — and wear proper riding attire and boots 👢
🐎 Ride at the level and pace of the least experienced rider
🐴 Keep at least one horse-length between horses
⚠️ Communicate trail hazards (e.g. holes, dogs, low branches) and check with others before changing gaits
↔ Ride single file when passing others on the trail
🚶‍♀️🐴 Leave and return to the trailer at a walk
💧 Allow horses to drink at water crossings and wait until all horses are finished
🛑 Pause for riders who dismount until they safely remount
🎀 Place a red ribbon on tails of horses known to kick
🚫🍺 Skip alcohol while riding See less

Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) – Important Info for Horse Owners
Horses may contract Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) by ingesting the bacteria Neorickettsia risticii, typically through accidentally eating infected insects such as mayflies, caddisflies, damselflies, or snails. Because of this, horses living near waterways are at higher risk. It is important to note that PHF is not spread directly from horse to horse.
PHF primarily causes diarrheal disease and can commonly lead to laminitis. Additional complications may include endotoxemia and renal disease. While many horses recover with aggressive medical therapy—often including Oxytetracycline (Oxytet), intravenous fluids, and supportive care—treatment can be intensive and costly. In some cases, complications like laminitis can become lifelong, debilitating conditions.
Horses are most at risk from late spring through September. To help protect your horse, vaccination is recommended in mid to late May, prior to peak exposure. While the vaccine does not provide 100% protection, it may help reduce the severity of the disease.
Contact your veterinarian to discuss the best prevention and vaccination plan for your horse.
