This is the memorial for animal actor Toto at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Toto, whose real name was Terry, appeared in 13 movies. Her most famous was Wizard of Oz. Toto retired at the age of 12. After her passing her owners buried her on their property. In 1958 the Ventura Freeway was expanding and Toto's owners property was sold to accommodate the construction. The entire area was destroyed, including Toto's grave. In 2010 a campaign to provide Toto with a memorial was started. A dedication ceremony took place on June 18, 2011 where her memorial stone was unveiled.

It's the Toto Christmas movie time of year. Yes, Toto starred in the Christmas movie, Son of the Navy, (1940), giving some of her best performances. The picture has a very special connection to the Pearl Harbor tragedy which made the little comedy about an orphan boy and his dog finding a home a bittersweet experience for many Americans.

That connection, film of sailors loading up onto the battleships to go to Pearl Harbor Hawaii a year before the tragedy, is probably the reason this film all but disappeared in film history. That is, until we found it again for the Famous Cairn Terrier Movie List on our website: Cairnterriermovies.com and cross referenced it to history websites.

These clips of men in launches going out to their ships are the last pictures many Americans saw of their loved ones taken before the Pearl Harbor tragedy that would occur one year later, just before Christmas.

Robert Weatherwax posted this announcement today on his page. For those of you who don't know Robert, or who his famous dad was, or his famous grandfather, uncles, and cousins, this is the family that trained all of the Lassies you've seen on film and television as well as countless other animal and dog stars of film and television including Toto. Toto had the late Frank Weatherwax, Bob's brother helping her learn all the routines that made her famous.
Bob Weatherwax's work with a line of Lassie dogs and many other canine movie and TV stars spanned decades of American entertainment and will be long remembered. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Robert and his family. Rest In Peace Bob Weatherwax.

The picture here is of one of the pairs of Ruby Slippers made to use in the movie "The Wizard of Oz", (1939). This pair belonged to the late Debbie Reynolds. They are special because they are the pair done in the "Turkish" style with upturned toes. They were among the potential designs for Ruby slippers made for possible use in the picture. This pair can be seen worn in some early publicity pictures for the film.
