Some tack may never see the arena again, but it still deserves respect. Cleaning and conditioning handed-down pieces lets them keep telling your family’s story, one stitch and scuff at a time. 🐴✨

If you’re within 45 miles of me, I’ll pick up and drop off your tack for free — as long as your order totals $75+ (DM for a quote).

🧼 Tip 5: Girths—The Hidden Grime Trap
Your cinch is probably grosser than your saddle.

To clean:
Leather: Clean and condition just like your saddle.
Neoprene: Use a rubber curry to scrub, then hose and hang.
Wool/Fleece: Brush, then spot clean with wool safe soap.

🚨 Shoulder relief cinch: Check that elastic every time — if it's crunchy, cracked, or stretched, replace it before it fails mid-run.

🧽 : Stall Mat Maintenance Isn’t Glamorous — But It’s Necessary
Lightweight portable stall mats are a show-season lifesaver… until they start smelling like wet regret. If you want them to last (and not funk up your trailer), regular care is key.

✅ Post-Show Mat Checklist:
❥ Remove all debris and shavings — the more you get off before leaving the show, the less you’ll drag home.
❥ If you can, rinse both sides on-site before loading up. Clean travel = happy trailer.

🏠 At Home Deep Clean:
❥ Give your mat a good soak with dish soap and serious elbow grease. A stiff brush works wonders.
❥ Let it air dry fully—preferably in the shade.

💡 Bonus Tip Tuesday: The sun’s UV rays can break down the material and weaken structure over time.

❥ Disinfect with a spray of chlorhexidine or diluted vinegar to knock out lingering bacteria.
❥ Make sure it’s bone dry before packing it back in the trailer.

This weekend at La Viva Taco I was entrusted with several older pieces of tack. Few of those saddles hand won thousands of dollars and were being kept as a reminder of where it all started.

The most interesting piece I got Saturday was a simple leather halter with brass hardware. From the before photo you can see the layers of dust. It was almost like an archeological dig site - each layer unveiled a new more stubborn level. The years of neglect had caused the leather to become sticky. This halter took more time to clean that your average saddle.

So why do the hard work? Well, other than it being a client’s halter, because of the history. This halter once belonged to the client’s grandparents. This halter spent time in the winner’s circle on some amazing race horses.

When the family was no longer racing the halter got set aside to collect dust.

Under all those layers of dust, gunk, and
stickyness is leather is pristine condition, cotton stitching that looked like it was brand new, and shiny brass hardware sporting the name of the owners of legendary race horses, “Masters.”

I was honored to bring this piece back to life. There is a good possibility the halter is going back to work, this time on the face of a pretty outstanding barrel horse.

Every saddle I clean is one step closer to funding Martina’s next run. 💖 She’s running her heart out this weekend, and I’m just the mom in the background detailing tack and cheering way too loudly.

So thanks for supporting Dirty Horse —you’re helping a kid chase her dusty dream around the arena.

It’s Day 1 of La Viva Taco and you know what that means:
✨ Clean tack, fast runs, and enough grit to season a street taco.
I’ll be parked near the action all weekend at Barn A Stall 2. You could also likely find me at The Balanced Dragon with Tara Massman or helping out my barrel racing kiddo (if you follow the glitter you can find her).

Drop off early. Ride pretty.

🌟 : Chicago Screws & Conchos: A Love Story (Kinda)

Let’s talk about those little metal lifesavers that hold everything together: Chicago screws, saddle screws, and conchos. They may be small, but they can cause big problems if you ignore them.

🧷 Check 'em once a month, especially before you ride.
For Chicago screws, a dab of blue Loctite can help keep things secure, but it’s not a one-and-done deal. You still need to check them regularly — trust me, that bridle cheek piece doesn’t care if you thought it was tight.

✨ Conchos, yes, the shiny ones you love, can work themselves loose just from the rhythm of riding. While you’re tacking up, give them a quick twist check. It only takes a second, and it might save you from a mid-ride flop.

🔧 Hidden saddle screws? Oh yeah, they’re sneaky.
They’re often tucked behind decorative silver (like corner plates), around the rear billets, and under the swells. I always check and tighten them during a full clean — but if you’re not sure where they’re hiding, ask me next time you see me. I’ll show you exactly where to look.

Because keeping your gear together literally keeps your ride together. 💪
