Crazy Cow is back to the milking abode!

Shyameshvari gave herself a birthday and Christmas present - she sneakily gave birth to a baby girl!
We were suspecting that she's pregnant, but we didn't know how close she was to giving birth. The day we were supposed to move her from the bull pen to the milk barn field, she had a baby, and she disappeared with it in the woods in the middle of the night.

In the morning, when we came to move her and the baby, we discovered, that she went as deep in the forest as she could. 4 hours of sad attempts to make her leave the forest failed completely - Shyameshvari didn't want to go. But don't be fooled, she wasn't weak, she had all the energy, and she was only interested in attacking others and digging the ground!

Later in the day, the baby ran away from Shyameshvari, to join the other cows. We saw the baby, and lead it to the horse trailer. The mom, however, was nowhere to be found. Several more hours of roaming in the forest trying to find her. Only around 10 30 pm she decided that it's time for her to come out and join the baby. There's something about these woods, that cows never want to leave them...

This morning Shyameshvari was supposed to get milked, because the baby didn't drink all her milk, and it was leaking on the ground. She knows the drill - she had 4 babies before - but no, she doesn't want to go in the barn! This time it took us just an hour to make her go in the barn and eat - phew.
Thanks for not killing us, even though we know you really wanted to!

The baby is very cute, we bet she's loving the adventure! She already became good friends with the older baby - Kishori, and Shyameshvari benevolently licking them both.

The new baby's father is Shyam, our handsome black Holstein bull.
We can predict that the baby will have a strong fiery personality, looking at the parents. We'll love her only more if she turns up to be an independent troublemaker. After all, somebody has to be in charge and lead the other cows - not everybody can be a shy cuddlebug!
But let's give her a chance to surprise us. Maybe she'll grow up to be like her uncle Vayu - sweet and friendly, but also very regal.

We'll get more pictures later, when the mom is more calm - we don't want to make her worried by disturbing the baby too much 🥰

Welcome to New Talavan, little baby!

Friday morning, September 23rd, Sukumari gave birth to a little baby, just before the Cow Fest.
Sukumari is a wonderful mom, and a very friendly and gentle cow in general. She's been following her baby everywhere, giving her kisses and feeding her lots of milk.
The baby is very sweet and friendly, just like her mom!
Gaurangi is happy about having a little sister, but she seems concerned about something. Our guess is that she is worried, that now, since Sukumari is back to the milking cows pasture, the neck bell will go back to her. Well, Gaurangi, we have plenty of bells, don't worry! But this particular bell might go back to Sukumari, because it has always been her favorite bell, so she probably wants it back!

Sukumari and her older daughter Gaurangi are famous for being very intelligent, kind and social. But they also like to be in charge, and they want to receive all the attention. They are beautiful, and almost aristocratic - you can never see them rolling in mud or being engaged in similar mischievous activities. They are best friends of people, other cows (if they are not competing for attention or treats), turkeys and cattle birds!
It's grate news that their family is expanding, and we hope we can make them as happy as they make us.

TWINS!

Last night we went to check on Nila, and saw nothing suspicious. In the morning we found her.. with a spotted baby. We ran to grab molasses and calcium for her, but when we came back to her, she had a brown baby... But we were sure that the baby was spotted before!!! Well, turnes out Nila had two girls, twins, that look nothing like each other or their parents.
Nila and Shyam are both black, with a lot of Holstein in their blood. How are the girls so colorful is a mystery.
Well, that's not the only mystery here. One of the babies has a very strong wanderlust and ran away from her mom 3 times! One time she almoat snuck out to the road, then she crawled under the barbed wire to the neighboring pasture and got stuck there, and then she crawled under the electric fence and got stuck in the rye grass.
One time was already enough, so we were trying to arrange something to keep them safe. It's a long story, in which many people participated. It included picking up and carrying both babies from the corner of the field to the baby pen, which sounds easy but wasn't! Cow babies are born very heavy. Then, we had to divide the baby pen in three parts with heavy panels, to keep the mother from the mud, to keep the mother from the big calves, and to have space for big calves to stay overnight when they are taken off the rye grass... and then we had to hook up 2 water troughs, bring hay to the whole gang, make sure the both babies drink, put cream on the udder, kiss everybody in their fluffy heads...so much work!
But so far so good and everyone seems happy. The baby girls are very vocal, and they make sure everybody hears them. And everybody does hear them! All the milking cows assembled around the baby pen for staring competition! Nimai the little ox even climbed a cement slab to see better.

Oof! What a month. Latest news: Our cow Rita started giving milk without any reason 🤔
She's Brown Swiss, 15 y.o., never had a baby, apparently got jealous of other Brown Swiss giving milk, and decided to join them.
On the other hand, she reunited with Kolkata (bull accidentally stepped on her tail...) with whom she came to New Talavana 10 years ago, and they were always together, until Kolkata had a baby 1.5 years ago. They haven't seen each other since then, because Kolkata was with the milking cows, and Rita was with the retired herd. Well, now they are together again, and they both feed an orphaned baby. Kolkata feeds him in the morning, and Rita feeds him at night.
Rita has never been to the milk barn before, so at first she was really agitated. But as soon as I brought the baby to her, she became very calm, and can stand in the headlock still as long as the baby is there :D Well, not everything goes smoothly though... Friendship of Kolkata and Rita is being tested by the argument whose baby this actually is. Each of them wants the baby to herself, only. Kolkata is being very jealous, but Rita likes the baby too, and the baby likes them both! Neverending barn drama...
Well, anyway, we're not sure if Rita is pregnant or is just a miracle cow, but we'll find out eventually. If she is pregnant, we have no idea how she did it. 🧐 But so far it seems like she's just a magic cow with a lot of motherly affection.
And Kolkata...well, she thinks that ALL the babies are hers. She always steals babies and secretly feeds them. She needs to face the reality, that she has to share babies with other mothers. Especially if she didn't give birth to them (babies, not mothers)!

Pictures attached: Rita, Rita again, this time with food all over her face!, Kolkata, Kolkata and her real baby Balaram, Jay (little ex-orphan, now he has 2 moms!).
