🐴 Dry lots are a key part of any horse facility plan — providing safe turnout when pastures are resting and essential housing during the winter months. They are great for managing pasture and horse health year-round! ❄️🌾

🤔 What is "Slobbers" in Horses? 🐴

If you've noticed your horse drooling excessively, it could be due to slobbers—a condition caused by a compound produced by a fungus that grows on red clover 🍀.

🔍 You can spot the fungus by checking the underside of red clover leaves—look for tiny black dots. It thrives in hot, humid weather and can affect horses grazing on fresh pasture or eating infected hay.

👉 While slobbers may look alarming, it’s usually harmless as long as your horse stays hydrated 💧.

H.R. 3623, the Horse Transportation Safety Act (HTSA), aims to prohibit the use of double-deck trailers for transporting all horses. These trailers do not allow the horse to keep their heads raised in transportation, which is tortuous to the animal and many states prohibit it. Learn more!

Bravo to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office for investigating animal cruelty and neglect, leading to charges of animal cruelty against the horse's owner. The neglect of animals in failing to provide basic needs -- like food and water -- is a crime. We applaud all law enforcement agencies and county attorneys who take crimes against animals seriously.

A Floyd woman was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after a horse was found on the side of the road, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Can you avoid mosquitos in Minnesota? Nope. But there are some things you can do for your equine friends! Check it out.

As temperatures and bug populations remain high, it is critically important that horse owners take steps to protect their equine friends (and their families) from mosquito bites. If you live in a region where mosquito populations persist well into the fall months, your veterinarian may recommend additional fall booster vaccinations against EEE/WEE and WNV (West Nile Virus).

If you don't know your horse's vaccination history or you are unsure whether they have received a certain vaccine, it's not too late to start from scratch with an initial series of inoculations followed by the appropriate boosters, as recommended by your horse doctor.

So, what is Eastern Equine Encephalitis?

EEE is a severe, viral disease affecting the central nervous system, and is transmitted to equids (and humans) by infected mosquitoes. There is no cure for EEE, and the mortality rate is 75-95% (in horses). Prevention through vaccination is key.

Contact your veterinarian for more information and learn more about EEE with the following resources:
