Newer students of K9U 🙂

Shadow
This handsome boy is back (and triple his size from his on-leash program back in November 😳). Shadow is with us for 10 days to transfer over his on-leash obedience/listening skills to e-collar work for we can’t start forming a solid off-leash foundation. He’s the smartest boy who loves to please! Everyone here adores having his sweet face around.

Jasper
Jasper has been with K9U for about a week already and he is in for my advanced 20 day board and train program. He’s a smart but very pushy/independent boy who was craving some structure in his life.

Main struggles:
- Listening Skills (his owners would have to chase him around the house and sometimes corner him EVERY DAY to get him to go outside and go potty).

- Fearfulness (loud noises, new people and new environments made him nervous. His mom couldn’t even take him for a walk)

- Pushiness towards Dad (he would constantly bark and growl at his dad any time he came in the house or walked by him)

- Slight Resource Guarding

- No recall (When Jasper was first rescued, he was outside off-leash and a loud noise scared him to the point that he took off and got hit by a car)

Smoke 💨
This fully doodle is in my 12 day on and off-leash day train program!

Main struggles:
- Pushy Recall (wouldn’t come back when his mom called him)
- Strong Pray Drive (He would go after the family chickens outside. He has killed one but has since stopped with his new rules)
- Low Impulse Control (had a hard time holding any commands and being patient)
- Counter Surfing/Jumping

Happy Friday Everyone!

Figured its time to give this boy an introduction 🐾

Everyone meet Baxter!

Baxter is 2 years old (he had his bday yesterday, of course we had to throw him paw-ty 🎉) and will be with K9University for a 5 week behavioral motivation.

Main struggles before starting with K9U:
- Extreme Reactivity towards dogs and people
- Resource Guarding Food, Furniture and sometime humans (he has 1 bite on record for guarding his food bowl)
- Going after his other furry housemate
- Pretty Extreme Fear-fullness (his owners can’t take him anywhere new as he would completely shut down. Any new person, new dog, new item, new environments or noises scared him)
- Pulled heavily on the leash on walks
- Heavy Anxiety (he was on meds up until this program)
- Very selective listening skills

As you can see, Baxter sure needed some guidance on how to navigate life before coming in. When his owners initially reached out to me, they were at a loss of what to do with him and were starting to feel like the house wasn’t safe with the behaviors he was starting to take off on and had some tough decisions to make.

I’m going to be honest, this boy and his situation is one of the tougher cases I’ve taken on as a trainer. But I am so happy they chose me to help them create a better life with Baxter!

He’s been with K9U for 1 week already and we have seen huge changes. To make the transition of dropping Baxter off easier on him, I did go out to his house with his family 3 times before he came in which was very helpful! That way he at least knew me before he was dropped off with me and my team.

We have made a solid routine for Baxter to follow each day. For dogs like Baxter, they need strong leadership and guidance to be successful. Lots of kennel time and strict rules/boundaries are a must. Taking away freedoms like going on the furniture, being able to freely walk around anywhere was extremely important. Structure is KEY.

So far he has made friends with 2 employees plus me, done successful group socialization with other dogs, gone on a successful reactivity free walk, gotten success with him knowing to move away from his food bowl when we ask and overall can see Baxter slowly come out of his shell. We have also completely weind off his anxiety meds (this was very important to me as I wanted to deal with the real Baxter, not the Baxter that was behind meds)

He’s got a long way to go but the steps this boy has made have been so heartwarming as his trainer! His owners will sure have a different lifestyle moving forward with him but at the end of the day it will be soo much better than what they were used to.

Welcome to my training family B, I’m soo happy you’re here and I cannot wait to see the new and improved shiny you on the other side of the program ✨ I know you can do it!

Time to show off some new students 🐶

Koda 🐾

This handsome fella was dropped off this past Monday for an Advanced Obedience Board and Train Program

Main Struggles:
- Leash manners
- Jumping when anxious
- Growling and having low confidence around new people (Stranger Danger)
- Having a hard time slowing his mind down when he’s uncomfortable

Mylo 🐾

Mylo is with K9U for a board and train to work on his on-leash obedience and mindset

Main struggles:
- Jumping
- Pulling in the leash
- Being aggressive/pushy when getting groomed
- Very pushy behaviors towards his family (knows how to get his way)
- Extreme Selective Hearing

Mylo is a great example of a boy that needs some rules in his life. Leadership is a must in his life. Without boundaries and rules, Mylo sure knows how runs the show! Though his family loves him, they know they need to change their relationship with him before he gets too out of control.

We have a lot to teach this guy while he’s here but are very hopeful to help shape his on-leash listening skills and behaviors.

Moose man 🐾

Moose is a regular daycare pup at the Furington and is with K9U for a 5 day on-leash Day Train Program.

Moose has a mom that is very committed to having a well rounded relationship with him. She actually has a great basic foundation of training in already but needed some tips for the areas she was struggling with as he is a very smart/stubborn boy.

Main Struggles:
- Jumping
- Slight leash reactivity towards dogs/some humans on walks
- Pushy behaviors with his recall

Though moose is only going through my on-leash foundation currently, it will be a great start for his mom to have tips for getting more success off-leash as the on-leash foundation work is the most important part of training :)

Figured I’d hop on Facebook to update everyone on my newest board and trains! All of these pups were dropped off last weekend 🐾

First girl to show off is our special Zoey girl 💕

Zoey is with K9U for 2 weeks to work on some fear anxiety/reactivity issues. Zoey and her momma have done some private sessions with me in the past so she was familiar me and the training process coming in. Though Zoeys mom has done a great job up until now doing everything she can to get Zoey’s listening/mindset into the best place possible, she still felt like Zoey needed some extra help with her reactivity issues towards new people (sometimes dogs).

Main goals with Zoey while she is in:
- Confidence building
- Slowing her mindset down in new pictures (this will help her anxiety and reality issues)
- Working in her impulse control with obedience commands

It’s been almost 1 week and she has already made some huge changes! We were able to get her out to tractor supply for a successful 10 minutes without her reacting at anyone (this is HUGE). She was still very nervous and had a hard time controlling her listening skills at times but we are so proud of the baby steps she is making. She is so very smart, just needs help with being confident.

The next 3 goofballs are Dobbie, Luna and Blu. All pups are from the same family and are in for their off-leash program. Each of them went through an on-leash program with me separately over the last 1.5 years. Blu is the newest member of the family and was in not too long ago!

Here are the main areas where each struggle on top of introducing e-collar repetitions for off-leash listening:

Dobbie- Dobbie man is the most handsome little guy but he can sure be pushy. He struggles most with his listening in walks in “heel” and has needed some fine tuning in his confidence.

Luna- Luna girl is just the best. She’s always been a smart cookie and overall enjoys having a job to listen to. She’s been pushy with her recall coming in but she’s already 10x better than where she was before.

Blu- Blu struggles the most with his anxiety and controlling his mind. He’s got a tail of steel that goes crazy when he’s excited (which is a lot) and will leave bruises in any legs near by which can be very overwhelming. Also from his crazy tail swings he hits the walls and furniture which has started causing the skin to break and make a bloody mess at times. Because of his overly anxious/excited mind he also like jumping.

We have made it a goal to teach all 3 name recognition as it will be so important for them to know who the owners are talking to and they all don’t just impulsively listen to commands. They have been doing so great with picking it up! It’s pretty amazing to see how smart pups can be.

The doodles go home Sunday and I’m excited to work with their owners on their new off-leash skills!

Lifestyle Training Place Practice with Rogan

Mr. Rogan is back in school for his e-collar foundation and off-leash mindset work!

On Monday I had some free time and decided to get some spring cleaning done in my car. As much as I love the spring weather, my car does NOT.. (notice all the muddy paw prints 😅)

In between training sessions with Rogan, I decided to use cleaning my car as a good time for him to practice PLACE and staying calm while I got busy. I’m always asking my clients to try to look at training as a lifestyle not just “training on, training off”.

This scenario is just an example of how owners can bring the training home and make a lifestyle of it! Of course there are many other scenarios where we could use the training to our advantage but take everything one step at a time.

Many times I see owners get overwhelmed on when they should be training/when they shouldn’t. And the simple answer is that every moment should be viewed as a “training opportunity”. Sure, you don’t need to have your dog in a command 24/7 (that’s not realistic). But, when you do have opportunities throughout your day where you could ask your dog to behave/listen to you.. you should take it!

Of course, don’t start with harder “pictures” and activities until you’re confident in your skill set. Always be realistic with where both you and your dog are at! Know that it’s okay to start with easier pictures and move to harder pictures when you’re ready. Any practice is better than not practicing at all. At the end of the day.. all dog training is- is consistency and EFFORT.

Remember that the more you ask your dog to listen to you, the better your relationship will be💕

New student Roll Call 🌟

Baron
This special boy got dropped of last Sunday! Barron and his family have done some private sessions with K9U before his board and train program which has been very helpful with his success so far. I love getting pups in that have started the basics, that way I can really take off and get creative with my repetitions while he’s with me

Program: Advanced on and off-leash board and train

Struggles:
- jumping
- recall
- low confidence in new pictures

and being too darn cute..😉

Smiley Bjorn

Bjorn is a smart but (very) stubborn girl that was dropped off last Friday for my advanced on and off-leash board and train program

Her momma came from out of states to have her in the program and has been waiting very patiently to have Bjorn start! In order for us to match schedules, Bjorn has been on my books and waiting since last November. That shows some commitment! I’m happy her mom and I were able to find a time that works. Even though she’s pushy, I still enjoy working with her 💕

Struggles:
- Very selective hearing/paying attention
- Light resource guarding with other dogs around
- Impulse control

PLEASE NOTE:
K9University is now on WAITLIST for any new evaluations. If you’re interested in getting on the waitlist, please reach out and let me know!

Time to shine some light on newer students that have walked through our door this past week

Ladybug 🐞
This precious face is with me for a behavior modification to work on fearful issues and reactivity along with some kennel anxiety. Ladybug was rescued not to long ago by her now owner and the rescue wasn’t sure of her past but it’s obvious she has had a couple litters of puppies and very well could have been a stray for some time. A couple months in of taking ladybug from the rescue, her owner started having reactivity issues out on walks and went after a dog (the dog wasn’t harmed but the scene was dramatic and overwhelming). Her owner has also noticed fear/growing/nipping behaviors around some men as well. ladybug is guessed to be around 6/7 years old and has no obvious signs of training background before starting with me.

After working with ladybug is past week I’ve really gotten to see her soft side, she’s so sweet! Just needed some rules and accountability in her life. To be fair, if she’s never been told what’s okay and not okay.. how was she supposed to know to respond in stressful scenarios? She just needed some guidance and I’m honored to help give that to her 🙂

Iris
Iris is in for an advanced on and off-leash board and train. She’s about to be a big girl so it’s important that she gets some training in so she doesn’t figure out how to run the show in her house. Her owners are actually returning customers for me, I trained their other Great Dane named Otis about 2 years ago! I love having returning owners. It really shows their commitment to creating a healthy, respectful relationship with the dogs on their life! Some areas that Iris struggles would be: confidence (she’s always secind guessing herself), fearfulness outside and in new environments, impulse control, oberall listening skills and jumping.

She’s made some huge improvements already in the first 4 days! Working with fearful/nervous dogs takes time. It’s important that I go slow with her to make sure I don’t set her backwards. She the cutest giant though and I love her cuddles 💜

Lucy
Lucy started her 5 day “On-leash Day Train” program with me on Monday. I just finished her sisters on-leash program a couple week (Mabel) and it’s been super fun seeing the difference in personalities between the two. Lucy is a smart girl but also lacks some confidence. She has caught onto the training very fast! Other areas we needed to approach: leash pulling and excited jumping/mouthing.

We unfortunately had to reschedule Lucy’s last day today so she and Mabel will both be back in April! Their owners have been so great at taking in all the information and putting in the work. I’m excited to see how far they both will be in their training by the time I see them again 🐾

Hemi
Hemi girl is back for a on-leash refresher week and we have started e-collar work to get her obedience foundation off leash! Hemi still struggles with some reactivity issues but when you stay on top of her busy mindset (the goal is to create a CALM brain for most of her day) she listens and responds so well! She’s a good girl and I’m so happy she’s back.

There are 2 more planned to come this weekend, busy busy schedules over here at K9University!

Sitting and working in my office and I turn and look down… To this 🥺 Louie has been the best office buddy the past couple weeks! I’m so proud of how far this little guy has come.

Watching him transform from having heavy separation anxiety/low confidence to the most calm, confident and obedient boy as been a pleasure. He’s really the definition of a good boy 🐾

Louis has two more days before he goes home! Stay tuned for his updated video on his progress. 20 days is a long time, I can’t wait for him and his owners to reunite ❤️

Bernedoodles are kind of a thing over there 😜

Mabel and Blue and 2 newer students at K9University! Both of these cuties are going through the same on-leash foundation. Just in different kinds of programs.

Mabel
This silly girl started her day train program last Friday. Mabel is a pup full of young, hyper energy and has hard time learning how to calm her brain down on her own. Mabel is your typical young pup who struggles with proper leash walking, jumping/whining out of excitement and overall listening skills.

As always, I will be teaching a strong on-leash obedience foundation for her owners to use to help her navigate through the world. I will also be heavily focusing on mindset work for the owners and how they can work on slowing her brain down during, especially in exciting scenarios.

Mabel‘s a smart cookie 🍪 With consistency, I know she will be a great pup! She just needs some guidance on how to get there. In a couple of weeks, Mabel‘s litter mate Lucy will be starting the same program with me 🙂 it will be fun working with 2 pups from the same litter. Keep an eye out for her!

Blue
Blue is the sweetest soul out there! Unfortunately, Blue has been bouncing around homes for a while but he’s finally in the right hands. Through the bouncing around and having little structure in his life- Blue has created a lot of nervousness and anxious energy which has caused him to make some bad decisions. Now that we finally have him on the right path, is true self is starting to shine. He’s extremely obedient, just struggled really knowing how to please his old owners. Personalities like blues thrive on accountability and structure. I am already so happy with where he has come!

In a month- Blue will be back for an off-leash foundation! Coming with him will be 2 other housemates who have gone through my on-leash foundation in the past. It will be a lot of working getting the pack on the same page with off-leash! I’m excited for the challenge ☺️

About K9U

Hello Everyone!

My name is Allison Woldstad and I have dedicated my life to helping owners and their dogs build a better life together. I have always had a love for animals but my love for dogs really started to appear when I was 16 years old and I got my first job at a dog kennel. Throughout my 8 years at that kennel, I realized that I not only enjoyed the presence of dogs, but I was also extremely interested in their behaviors and why they did what they did.

When a rescue dog came through with no home because his dog aggression was out of control, I decided to take him home because I was determined find balance for him and change both his and my life. In 2016 I left home to start my adventures to become a Certified Professional Dog Trainer at The National K9 School For Dog Trainers in Ohio. During my time there I became certified in basic obedience (on and off leash), behavior modifications, tracking and trailing, protection training, K-9 units, confidence building, and training assistance dogs.

My mission now is to help other families who are struggling create a calm, safe, and happy home. I feel that it is important for everyone to know that they are not alone when it comes to needing help with their dogs. That is why I crated K9U!
