My long-term volunteers, Michelle and her kids Nathan and Kiera just moved out of state. I will miss visiting with them and having them help me with the driver pickups. I am looking for one or two volunteers to help me the second Saturday of the month from 9am to 11:30am.
We help load pet food into volunteer drivers cars. This is a good opportunity for students who need to have community service hours. The next date is Saturday, August 9. If you have any interest, please fill out our volunteer application: https://www.volgistics.com/appform/1397733299
and contact Melanie at [email protected] for more details.

CES seems to be a magnet for lost kitties! I brought this cutie home with me and planned to rehome her. Turns out she doesn't like dogs, so she hid in my apartment. It took me 5 days to find her. TillieBean had no idea there was a cat in the house--talk about being oblivious! She was coming out at night to eat and look around. I finally found her in my closet and brought her to a client who wanted a replacement for her cat who died. That didn't go well; she wants to be an only child and the older mail cat was hiding on top of the refrigerator to get away from her! She ended up living happily with a CES employee as an only cat.

Jen found a kitten who was crying that was stuck between a screen and outside door where the screen was broken. The screen was broken just enough that she was trapped. She must have been in there for a very long time. She settled into Jen’s arms and was taken into the Meals on Wheels office.

They named her Murphy and secured food and a litter box for her. Murph was extremely hungry and made short order of the food. Melanie gave her a pink ball with a bell and Murph was in heaven, chasing the ball all around our office. Once she finished with that, she was ready for a nap, and she found her spot and the napping was on.

The MOW Manager took Murph home for the night and all was well. She appeared to get along with her other adult cats but was not so sure of the EXTREMELY large dog that was there. She curled up with Jen and finally started to purr.

Murphy came back to the office the next morning as Melanie had found Murphy her forever home. Liz’s cat, Blackie, died last week and Liz was devastated. She took one look at Murphy and said she looked just like Blackie at that age! It was love at first sight.

The Animal Humane Society sponsored a free veterinary clinic at CES for our neighbors on May 1, 2025. It turned out to be their largest event so far. They served 40 animals and everyone (well, except a few cats) was happy! AHS also brought lots of harnesses, leashes, and handouts with information about food shelves and pet food and gave everyone flea/tick treatments, too.

The generous dog owners from Dogtopia of Bloomington donated a huge amount of collars, leashes, pet bowls, dog toys, balls, pet beds and jackets. Our neighbors were delighted to be able to pick out new items for their pets. A miniature Yorkshire terrier was getting tossed around his large carrier, so I put him in a cat’s shoulder carrier—I am SO sorry I didn’t take a picture because he looked adorable p*eking out of it!

I hope AHS will offer to do this again; next time I’ll make sure to have treats for the people as well as the pets!

CES' Ani-Meals: Meals on Wheels for Pets - Twin Cities program provides food, supplies, and veterinary care to our senior clients, so they can care for their companion pets. Last week, we were able to partner with Animal Humane Society to offer a free Pet Vet Clinic for our Ani-Meals clients and served 40 pets.

For our Ani-Meals clients, their pet is more than a friend — they’re family and a lifeline🐶🐱. This clinic ensured our clients' cherished companions stay healthy and by their side. A huge thank you to Animal Humane Society for helping us support the wellness of our senior clients and their beloved pets.

Hi everyone, one of my steadfast volunteers, Suzanne recently had a birthday. She requested that in lieu of presents, friend donate to Ani-Meals. Her friends donated $548 to Ani-Meals!! What a wonderful way to start out May! Happy Birthday Suzanne, and many thanks to all of your kind friends.

Here's a picture of Laura and Milo, they get dog food and p*e pads from Ani-Meals. Milo just got his nails trimmed at K-9 & Kitty Kutters and the groomer fell in love with him. He kept trying to kiss her instead of holding still. He is one of the happiest dogs I have ever met.

Great news--some kind pet lover donated 45 pounds of pet food from Chewy. Two 16 # bags of Purina Small Bites and 40 cans of Friskies seafood & chicken pate. This will give us a jumpstart on Junes inventory, thank you very much!

We have added 14 cats and dogs to Ani-Meals in the last two weeks--kind of scary. I'm going to be adding another volunteer driver in June. Volunteers deliver the second Saturday of the month.; they pick up between 10 am and noon. We deliver to Meals on Wheels clients in Minneapolis. If anyone is interested in volunteering to be a regular driver or a substitute driver, please contact me. You can fill out a volunteer application at cesmn.org and indicate your interest in Ani-Meals or call me at 612-870-1125, ext. 112.

I'm not going to show a picture of the donated food (but THANK YOU to whoever sent it!!). Here's a picture of Milo (one of our clients) who is letting me know he is ready for his walk!

Hi everyone, Some kind person just sent me a 7 # bags of IAMS Proactive health for cats from Amazon! Whoever you are, thank you. We do have a wish list on Amazon for our Food Market and Ani-Meals. If you are interested in donating, take a look at what we need. We are feeding 32 dogs now, 22 of them are under ten pounds and need Small Bites. I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine today! Here's a picture of Jethro, he died a while ago, but I still miss his adorable, happy smile...

Christmas came in an unlikely package for Deb this year! After losing her beloved Katerina in October, Deb misses the companionship of her cat but isn't ready to take on a new one. Luckily, we had the next best thing: a lifelike animatronic cat complete with purrs, meows, and movement. Upon opening the gift and hearing that first meow, Deb exclaimed "Oh, I love you too!". After cooing, testing out the included fur brush, and administering a belly rub, Deb set up a cat bed for her new companion. When asked what she would name the cat that was decidedly a "she", Deb replied "Big Fluff. Or no, maybe Blessy, like a blessing." We are so lucky that Gifts for Seniors was willing to give us the battery operated cat!

Hi everyone, two of my long-time Ani-Meals clients are in dire straits and need help. Diane and Debbie have five indoor cats and have been feeding all the feral cats around their home in an industrial area. They have been dedicated to catching feral cats and getting them spayed and neutered for years. Their mother died intestate a few years ago and they were not aware they needed to transfer ownership of the house and pay taxes. For that reason, they are delinquent in paying their taxes and face the prospect of losing their home. Trying to find subsidized housing is hopeless as the waiting lists are about 3-5 years long.

If anyone is willing to help, here is the link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-diane-and-debbie-in-keeping-their-home?qid=697366d9a6f655c19d1ac291d0759cfb

Our Story

Ani-Meals: Meals on Wheels For Pets serves the people and the pets in the Minneapolis. Many people in our neighborhood are homebound, at nutritional risk, may spend much of their time in relative isolation, and are often lonely. Meals on Wheels delivered meals help, but so may a beloved pet, relieving loneliness and providing companionship.

However, feeding a pet can be expensive. An animal can literally eat into the food resources of already vulnerable people. Meals on Wheels volunteers realized that some clients were giving up a share of their delivered food to feed their companions. This meant seniors going hungry, as well as animals not receiving their proper nutrition.

Ani-Meals provides monthly, weekend deliveries of some purchased, but mainly donated pet food. This includes some specialized foods, such as canned-only, grain free, small bites, UT and diabetic for animals with more specific dietary needs. We also are trying to help with getting pets up to date on necessary shots and spaying/neutering.
