(Instructions 0:13) Puppies naturally want to jump up on people and pull towards other dogs. Most dog owners want to bring their puppy into public places. ➡️ HOW do we prepare our puppies?
TEACH THEM WHAT TO DO.
⭐️ In this game, we are teaching our puppies:
1). They’ll be rewarded for fighting the intrusive thoughts of doing the “bad thing” haha. In other words, if they can just have enough self control to not jump or pull in that moment, they’ll be rewarded.
2). Being calm is always a great option for your puppy. Learning to how relax during fun moments is extremely difficult. Just imagine bringing a toddler into Disney Land and then expecting them not to touch anything or do anything fun—many of our puppies perceive the world as one giant playground. 😂
3). If they do jump up or pull towards the distraction, you will (kindly) remove them from the scenario via the leash. In other words, your puppy will learn that the jumping or pulling is not even an option for them in the long run—every time they jump up or pull towards the distraction, they are brought further away from the “fun” person/dog/off-limits item, not closer.
Be consistent. Be kind. You will likely struggle more with learning this game than your puppy will. Why? Because it’s not easy to learn how to become a skilled handler, but you can do it if you choose to put your mind to it.
If things don’t go smoothly, like in this video, don’t be quick to blame your puppy. Instead, ask yourself “What could I do to set my puppy up for success (make it easier to not jump or pull towards) for the next round?
Keep in mind that when it comes to training around distractions, distance is your very best friend. If you don’t know why your puppy is unable to see the distraction up close w/o jumping or pulling, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND filming the game for 60 seconds. Watch it back. Repeat. Focus on finding the mistake you made that led up to your puppy deciding to jump &/or pull. TRY AGAIN.
Disclaimer: Verify medical clearance with your veterinarian to ensure your puppy is vaccinated and is able to safely train in public spaces.
