☀️🥵🐴This picture is obviously a joke… but this heat is 𝐍𝐨 𝐉𝐨𝐤𝐞.☀️🥵🐴

Th extreme temperatures we’re experiencing are something we all need to take 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲.

Already this season, two of our farriers have experienced heat exhaustion. Working outside in Florida is challenging enough, but many appointments also involve standing in front of a hot forge while lifting and supporting horses in the heat.

There are a few simple things horse owners can do that make a tremendous difference:

✅ Have your horse caught and ready before the appointment.
✅ Provide a covered, shaded work area.
✅ Set up fans.
✅ Have your horse fly sprayed before we arrive.
✅ Popsicles are always a bonus 😂

A horse that is well behaved, comfortable, and prepared makes a difficult job much safer and easier. Every extra minute spent catching a horse, waiting on an owner, trying to get a horse to stand still or fighting flies is another minute working in dangerous heat.

Our goal is to provide your horse with the best hoof care possible, but we also have to look after the health and safety of our team. By working together, we can make summer appointments safer and more comfortable for everyone involved.

Here is a great video to show how laminae keep the foot together. And if you’ve ever hear me talk about stretched or exposed laminae. This is why it is so important to thoroughly clean out the entire hoof not just the area around the frog and to apply proper antibacterial medicines when advised.
