Quick Tips For Humans:
- Stay Hydrated & Keep Water Nearby. 💦
- Wear Sunscreen as Needed. ☀️
- Note shaded areas and give yourself time to cool. 🌴
- Wear Loose & Lightweight Clothing. 👚

At 75 degrees (F) , the asphalt can get up to 125 degrees sitting in the sun. At 87, 143 degrees (F)! ⛱️☀️

You may remember Amber from over a year ago - waiting for a home at Milford Animal Control. She’s been home for almost a year now, enjoying her own place, her very own couch - and making strides in her training. 🐾🐶

Here we tackle two major topics - Learning in new environments and doggy body language. 🔬
Everytime you train a new behavior such as “Sit,” or “Down,” it’s extremely important to practice everywhere you can. A dog may be comfortable performing a behavior in the home, but outside can be a different story with no background knowledge.
Doggy Body Language is one of the toughest topics out there. Every dog has its own quirks, and may or may display what we would consider baseline reactions, like Amber - her ears do normally stay back on her head, and can be easily missed for stress or discomfort.

Training incorporates a lot of structure, daily management, and lifelong maintenance - but with a positive attitude and an understanding trainer - it becomes myriad, and even fun!
As seen here, Recall & Leash Pressure are only some of the behaviors you can teach to give your dog extra freedom and trust them to listen to you when needed.
Remember, Train, Trust, Thrive. 🐾

🍔 CHOWDER - The Linebacker of Milford Animal Control 🏈

When introducing Basic Obedience, one of the most important things we want to teach is Impulse Control.
With Chowder’s size and strength, he can put people off on the first look, which is why he’s working so hard to show off his manners ❤️‍🩹

Impulse Control relates to a dog’s ability to stop themselves from running after prey, running through an open door, eating things they’re not supposed to, you name it!
We teach them to manage their excitement and emotion by performing other behaviors.

Here, we can watch Chowder learning how to Sit-Stay off leash in a controlled environment - while learning how to approach without jumping, or bulldozing into his person. 💯

Chowder’s been at Milford Animal Control for close to a year now.. waiting and watching other pups go home.

Please welcome one of my favorite trainees - Kota, a beautiful, fully white Pitt Terrier Mix. 🐶

Kota was dumped around Milford, CT, his old family giving him up for what we believe is his recently diagnosed Addison’s Disease - an endocrine disorder.

When we first rescued Kota from the streets, he was skinny to the bone. With his monthly injections, love, and a little TLC, our boy is growing into a SUPERSTAR ✨

Enjoy watching our sweet boy learn how to Spin through my legs - and that’s not the only thing he knows! Sit, Stay, Orbit, Paw - this guy is NOT to be skipped over!!

Since today is her favorite day of the year, we figured it would be perfect for the first installment of,

🐈‍⬛ Strega’s Safety Tips!

🐾 Always keep your pets restrained when opening the door for Trick or Treaters! Halloween is the second most common holiday for pets to escape, due to high stress and high traffic.

🐾 Keep your candy and chocolate away!! Xylitol, Chocolate, Macadamia, almost all the regular snacks can be deadly or illness inducing.

🐾 Stray away from spider webbing cloth and small dangling decorations, pets are known to ingest and wrap themselves up!

🐾 Keep costumes basic and allow space to breathe, move, run, and avoid headgear!
