Come learn with Lorre Mueller (Trinity Equine Services)
and Tarrin Warren (TNT Quarter Horses, LLC).
We are exploring the horse from the inside out! Learn how your horse functions inside to better understand how to influence them from the outside. We will have both classroom and hands on for participants. Auditors can participate in classroom discussion and watch during hands on portions. Lorre will teach some basic bodywork exercises to focus on the areas being discussed. Tarrin will help you with detailed exercises on the ground and under saddle to help target the areas being discussed of focus.

Module one - Making the Connection
Focus - head, poll and hyoid. Bits and tack that affect this area. Rider influence and aids

Module two - Building the Connection
Focus - back. Saddle and tack that affect this area. Rider influence and aids.

Module three - Strengthen the Connection
Focus - feet and limbs. Tack and trimming / shoeing that affect this area. Rider influence and aids.

Module four - Refining the Connection
Focus - Neck, Head and Shoulders. Rider aids and tack that affect this area.

Participants (limit 6) -$375 plus stabling and lunch (if ordered)

Auditors - $180 plus lunch (if ordered)

So, while I’m making people mad regarding marketing mares as broodmares that shouldn’t be broodmares.
Can we please stop making it ok for broodmares to be painful? Being broodmare sound doesn’t mean it’s ok for them to be painful while being used for broodmares. I have recently watched videos of mares being advertised as broodmares that are clearly in crippling pain. Address the pain or euthanize them. Don’t keep using their uterus if you can’t keep them reasonably comfortable.
Yes, I have room to speak on this. I have purchased broodmares for their genetics and they came to me completely crippled. Yes, I knew they were crippled when I bought them. I felt bad for them and was willing to invest $ in getting them comfortable enough to carry foals without the crippling discomfort. They had not received even basic maintenance (teeth, feet) not to mention addressing their discomfort. My broodmares get maintenance just like our saddle horses. Their pain is addressed, they are on a 5 week trim cycle, they get yearly dentistry, bodywork, etc. A painful mare has hormonal imbalances. Those stress hormones are passed to the foal and influence the foal’s nervous system and behavior. I want my broodmares to have a well regulated nervous system so the foals receive the best hormonal and behavioral influences from their dams.

Unpopular opinion. Just because your mare isn’t sound, it doesn’t make her a broodmare. I am seeing so many ads for crippled mares that have no business reproducing. They got injured, have temperament issues or have other soundness issues and people immediately market them as “broodmare sound”. An “unsound” mare shouldn’t immediately be seen as a breeding prospect. They should not be looked at any differently than a gelding that has become unusable. Unless they are truly a good prospect, retire them or euthanize them. Don’t reproduce them. A c**t that is injured doesn’t automatically become a stallion prospect.
Second unpopular opinion. STOP marketing your 20 year old plus mares as broodmares. Unless you have them bred and can guarantee they are breeding sound, retire them or euthanize them. They have done their job for you. Don’t sentence them to a life of unknown care or neglect. Don’t use them up and then dump them.

Dr. Jamie Pribyl, DVM, professional services veterinarian at Boehringer Ingelheim says approximately 40% of equine veterinarians in the United States are over the age of 50, heading toward retirement age. Just over 5% of veterinary graduates go on to practice as equine veterinarians.

“That is a really small number,” Pribyl said. “And then, of those 5% that go into equine practice, 50% of them will leave that equine practice within the first five years. The primary reasons are due to burnout from the demands of the profession and personal struggles due to lower starting salaries in equine practice compared to other areas of veterinary medicine.”

Issues contributing to burnout include exponentially growing student debt — which Pribyl says is not something a horse owner can do anything about — unfavorable working hours and conditions compared to small-animal colleagues and non-veterinary careers, as well as lack of work-life balance.
