How do we keep the sale horses looking camera ready year round? Honestly, a lot of it comes down to consistency... and Coat Defense

Between changing weather, training schedules, and turnout, skin issues can pop up quickly in a busy program. We use Coat Defense Daily Preventative Powder to help stay ahead of scratches, rain rot, fungus, and general skin irritation before they become bigger problems. It’s easy to use, keeps coats healthy and comfortable, and helps our horses continue looking and feeling their best.

It may have been a quieter weekend for The Frame, but it was still an incredibly successful one.

Martin piloted Erin Durst and Marsha Spencer’s Justified to a 3rd place finish in the CCI2*-S at Virginia Horse Center Foundation Eventing—an excellent result for the pair’s first FEI run of the season. We’re excited to watch this partnership continue to develop as the year goes on.

Then yesterday, Martin, Joe, and Alese loaded up two full trailers and headed to the A Jump Above Memorial Day Schooling Show with seven horses. From young horses getting mileage, to sale horses and training horses preparing for bigger outings later this season, everyone came home with productive rounds ahead of their trip to Upperville later this week.

Meanwhile, back at the farm, foaling season is officially underway. We’ve already welcomed our first c**t of the year, with more babies on the way soon.

This video idea came directly from a viewer request, and honestly, we were excited to make it!

Cavaletti work is something we use constantly at The Frame, whether we’re producing young horses, or helping more experienced horses improve their balance, adjustability, and strength.

Sometimes the simplest exercises end up being the most useful.

Check out the full video now on YouTube to hear Martin break down the full ride, training philosophy, and how cavaletti fit into the bigger picture of producing sport horses.

Ragnarok MFF "Rok" (Contendro I/Cambridge/Lacapo)
2021 16.1h bay KWPN gelding

Rok is the kind of young horse that is easy to picture becoming a serious partner in the jumper ring. By the influential Contendro I, Rok combines proven jumping bloodlines with an exceptionally kind and rideable temperament.

His sire Contendro I has long been respected for producing athletic, careful horses with excellent minds across both jumping and eventing disciplines, and Rok reflects many of those qualities. He is naturally balanced, easy to handle on the ground, and remarkably calm under saddle for his age, while still showing the power and scope expected of his pedigree. His damline further reinforces his athleticism and rideability, bringing together the careful technique and modern sport horse type that make him an exciting prospect for the future.
Rok already has an impressive start to his resume, earning the highest free jumping score ever awarded at a North American stallion inspection with an 89 in 2024. He has since been gelded. That talent has continued to translate under saddle, where he is currently developing toward the 5-year-old young jumper classes and confidently schooling around the 1.0m tracks.

What makes Rok especially appealing is how straightforward he is to work with despite his age and talent. He is personable, respectful, and easy in the barn, with a quiet, easy-going attitude that makes him suitable for a junior or adult amateur working with a trainer. He handles daily life well, goes out happily both with friends or alone.

Still young and continuing to learn, Rok offers all the pieces people look for in a modern sport horse: scope, rideability, carefulness, and a genuinely kind temperament. He is a horse with significant potential for the jumper ring, paired with the attitude to make the process rewarding along the way.

Videos coming soon.

One thing about sale horse Balou de L'Ange (Balou du Rouet/Abanos/Ehrensold)? He is always game.

One day, he’s flying around the jumper ring, then he’s happily heading out cross-country schooling just for fun. Balou continues to prove that you really can have a horse that wants to win and still be your favorite trail buddy the next day.

A large part of our process relies on space management: introducing new concepts in a small, controlled environment that the horse already understands before gradually increasing the space. Typically, that progression moves from the stall, to the round pen, to the small arena, and eventually into larger spaces and hacking out.

But sometimes the round pen is unavailable, or for certain horses, it can simply feel like too much too soon. In those situations, we often add an intermediate step: the barn aisle.

With the proper safety precautions in place—clear aisles, secure footing, and a quiet environment—the straight lines and familiar setting can help a young horse better organize themselves mentally and physically. Sometimes that small adjustment is all it takes to help the lesson click.

I recently had the chance to ride in the new stirrups from Herm Sprenger North America, LP and came away incredibly impressed. At The Frame, safety is always a priority when it comes to equipment, and we especially appreciated the thoughtful safety design built into these stirrups. The wide footbed also offers a really stable, comfortable feel in the saddle—something we value during long days spent riding young horses and developing performance horses.

Lincara TWF "Lillet" (Landtinus/Rosenthal/Stedinger) 2013 16.2h bay Oldenburg mare

For L or P.

Lillet is a sporty, forward-thinking mare with competition experience in both the jumper and eventing. She has successfully shown up to 1.10m jumpers, and has also evented through Training level—bringing home top placings and regularly winning her dressage phase.

Quick-footed and efficient, Lillet is balanced, uphill, and naturally adjustable, with auto changes and a huge stride that makes her feel effortless between the fences. She’s equally comfortable at home in the ring or out on a hunter pace, and has completed many with ease. Uncomplicated and competitive, Lillet would be a great match for a junior or amateur in a program looking for a fun, versatile partner who’s ready to walk into the ring and go.

Currently registered with USEF, USHJA and USEA.

One of the most important parts of starting a young horse is remembering that nothing we’re asking under saddle should feel new to them.

The cues are the same ones they’ve already learned on the ground—the only difference now is that they’re carrying a rider and learning how to balance while the conversation shifts to their back. When a horse struggles, it’s often not about understanding the aid, but about organizing their body well enough to respond.

It’s a process of connecting the dots, not adding pressure.
