Today was an important day for us! Marlee is finally old enough to get all of her OFA’s completed! (Hips, elbows, eyes and heart) We will be anxiously awaiting results and with good results we will plan for a breeding with her and Rusty by end of summer/first part of fall. This will be an exceptional litter of dark red puppies and fully health tested parents. We hope to share the results soon so we can begin our waiting list for this upcoming litter 🐾

You’ve been counting down the days.
Saving all the photos.
Rewatching the same videos of your puppy over and over again.

Imagining what it’s going to feel like when they’re finally home.

Then pickup day comes
and just like that,
they’re in your arms.

It almost doesn’t feel real.

The car ride home is quiet.
Maybe they curl up in your lap or
maybe they just sit there, wide-eyed, taking it all in.

And somewhere between the excitement and the nerves,
it hits you,

π’•π’‰π’Šπ’” π’Šπ’” π’“π’†π’‚π’π’π’š π’‰π’‚π’‘π’‘π’†π’π’Šπ’π’ˆ.

π‘«π’‚π’š 1
You bring them inside, and everything is new.

New smells.
New sounds.
New people.
A whole new life they didn’t choose but are trying to understand.

They’re trying so hard to be brave.

Most of them are extra quiet this first day.
They might follow you from room to room,
or sit at your feet like they’re not quite sure where to go.

Sometimes they won’t eat much.
Sometimes they just sleep.

And sometimes you’ll catch them just watching you.

π’•π’“π’šπ’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝒕𝒐 π’‡π’Šπ’ˆπ’–π’“π’† π’šπ’π’– 𝒐𝒖𝒕.

I always tell my families,
this isn’t their personality yet.

This is a baby who just left everything they’ve ever known,
trying to make sense of where they are now…
and if they’re safe here.

That first night,
that’s the part no one really prepares you for.

The house is quiet.
Too quiet.

No littermates piled up beside them.
No familiar smells.
No mama.

And then you hear it
that soft little cry.

The one that makes your heart drop a little.

Because they miss what they knew.

And if you’re being honest,
it might make you a little emotional too.

Because in that moment, you realize

π’•π’‰π’†π’šβ€™π’“π’† 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒂 π’ƒπ’‚π’ƒπ’š.

π‘«π’‚π’š 2
Something shifts, just a little.

They start to move around more.
Follow you a bit closer.
Get a little braver.

You’ll start to see tiny pieces of them come out.
a tail wag, a playful bounce, a little bit of personality peeking through.

And this is usually when it hits you, too.

The tiredness.
The potty accidents.
The broken sleep.
The β€œoh wow… this is a lot” feeling.

And I want you to know,

𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 π’‡π’†π’†π’π’Šπ’π’ˆ? 𝑰𝒕’𝒔 π’π’π’“π’Žπ’‚π’.

You’re not doing anything wrong.
They’re not β€œbeing bad.”

You’re just both learning each other, in real time.

π‘«π’‚π’š 3
And then… here they come.

A little more confident.
A little more comfortable.
A little more themselves.

They start exploring further,
getting into things,
showing more energy… more curiosity.

And this is usually when families laugh and say
β€œokay… now I see it” πŸ˜…

Because now you’re meeting your puppy.

Not the quiet, unsure version…
but the one that was there all along,

𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 π’˜π’‚π’Šπ’•π’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒔𝒂𝒇𝒆 π’†π’π’π’–π’ˆπ’‰ 𝒕𝒐 π’„π’π’Žπ’† 𝒐𝒖𝒕.

π’šπ’π’–π’“ π’‘π’–π’‘π’‘π’š π’Šπ’”π’β€™π’• π’ˆπ’Šπ’—π’Šπ’π’ˆ π’šπ’π’– 𝒂 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅 π’•π’Šπ’Žπ’†β€¦
π’•π’‰π’†π’šβ€™π’“π’† π’‰π’‚π’—π’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝒂 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅 π’•π’Šπ’Žπ’†.

They don’t know your routine yet.
They don’t know the rules yet.
They don’t even fully know you yet.

But they’re learning.

So those first few days?

Keep them slow.
Keep them gentle.

Don’t overwhelm them with too much too fast.
Stay consistent where you can.

Love on them,
but also give them space to settle.

Let them follow you.
Let them rest.
Let them just be little.

Somewhere in those first 72 hours,
between the quiet moments, the little cries, the accidents, and the tiny tail wags.

they start to realize

π’•π’‰π’Šπ’” π’Šπ’” π’‰π’π’Žπ’†.

Don't ask me for life advice, you will end up with a new dog

I often get the question: β€œWhy a Golden Retriever?”
Or...β€œIf I’ve never had a Golden before… what should I know?"

Here’s the honest (and fun) answer: owning your first Golden is like bringing home a best friend who’s equal parts athlete, comedian, and emotional support shadow. They don’t just *live* with youβ€”they want to be *with* you. In the kitchen, in the yard, in the carpool line, in the bathroom… all of it. If you’ve always wanted a dog that feels like a true family member, this breed is famous for that.

That said, a few things first-time Golden owners don’t always expect:

- **They’re sweet, but they’re still a working breed.** Goldens were bred to retrieve and work alongside people. So yes, they’re gentle and lovingβ€”but they also need daily exercise and something productive to do. Walks, training sessions, retrieving games, learning new skills… it all matters. A bored Golden will absolutely β€œcreate” their own job, and it’s usually something like reorganizing your shoes or taste-testing the kids’ toys.

- **They’re smart and emotionally invested.** They learn quickly, but they also care deeply. They do best with consistency, clear boundaries, and positive training. They want to understand what you want from them, and they genuinely *try*β€”which is one of the reasons people fall so hard for this breed.

- **They’re social and people-focused.** Most Goldens assume strangers are just friends they haven’t met yet. They tend to thrive when they’re included in family life, not left to entertain themselves in the background.

- **They’re β€œbusy” as puppies.** Golden puppies are adorable… and they’re also mouthy, curious, and enthusiastic about everything. The puppy stage is a season of teaching: what to chew, how to settle, how to greet politely, and how to follow the rules of the house. If you put the time in early, it pays off for years.

- **Yes, they shed.** If you’re looking for a dog that leaves β€œGolden glitter” on your clothes, your couch, and somehow your coffee… welcome. A good brush and a sense of humor go a long way.

But the payoff? A Golden Retriever brings a special kind of joy to a homeβ€”more laughter, more movement, more companionship, and a whole lot of heart. They’re the dog that wants to be part of your everyday life, and they have a way of making ordinary moments feel like something. πŸ’™πŸΆπŸ©·
