The era of sealed-in batteries is coming to an end. Europe is urging phone makers to design batteries that are simpler to swap and made to last longer.

From 2027, mobile phones sold in the EU will generally need batteries that users can take out and replace with ease, no proprietary tools or complicated repair methods required.

The rules also say replacement batteries must stay available for at least 5 years after a phone model leaves the market.

Durability standards are tightening as well. Smartphones sold in the EU must generally keep at least 80% of their original battery capacity after 800 full charge cycles.

The aim is simple: help phones last longer, make repairs easier, reduce needless upgrades, and curb electronic waste.

For years, many smartphones have shipped with sealed-in batteries that are hard or costly to replace. Europe is now steering the industry the other way.

From 2027, Europe will require phones to come with easier-to-replace, longer-lasting batteries so devices stay useful for longer. Would you support this where you live?
