Meet Dash, a 4-year-old Dachshund who suddenly lost the ability to walk on his back legs.

MRI revealed an intervertebral disc extrusion in his mid-back, compressing the spinal cord.

Given the severity and rapid progression of his signs, surgery was recommended to relieve that pressure.

This timelapse captures Dash’s hemilaminectomy, a procedure performed to decompress the spinal cord and give him the best chance at walking again.

No signs of Chiari-like malformation or syringomyelia? Certain at-risk breeds may qualify for a reduced-cost MRI screening through the Canine Chiari Institute at SEVN. 🧠

Chiari-like malformation is a condition commonly seen in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Brussels Griffons, and other small breed dogs, where the skull is too small for the brain. This can lead to fluid-filled cavities within the spinal cord known as syringomyelia (SM). Early screening can help identify changes before clinical signs develop.

Our reduced-cost screening package includes:
• High-field MRI imaging
• Exam by a board-certified neurologist
• Anesthesia, monitoring, and IV catheter placement
• Detailed MRI report and interpretation

Eligible pets must:
• Be at least 1 year of age
• Be an at-risk breed
• Have no prior diagnosis or clinical signs of CM/SM

To learn more or schedule a screening, contact our Miami hospital at 305-274-2777.

Is it just a cute habit… or could it be something neurological? 🐶

A head tilt can be completely normal when dogs are curious, listening closely, or trying to understand us. But when the tilt becomes persistent or is paired with signs like loss of balance, abnormal eye movements, or difficulty walking, it may point to an issue within the vestibular system, the part of the nervous system responsible for balance and spatial orientation.

If your Cavalier is scratching at the air or showing sensitivity around the neck, it may be more than simple itching. Chiari-like malformation is a neurological condition common in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, the Brussels Griffon, and other toy breeds that leads to phantom scratching.

In this video, Dr. Brandon Durr from Southeast Veterinary Neurology (SEVN) explains Chiari-like malformation and how it causes a secondary condition known as syringomyelia. Syringomyelia is a neurological condition in which fluid-filled pockets develop within the spinal cord causing neurological symptoms.

Many dogs do not show symptoms right away, but as syringomyelia develops, signs such as pain, phantom scratching, and sensitivity around the neck may begin to appear.

Frankie, a 3-year-old Dachshund, went from acting slightly uncomfortable one evening to suddenly dragging his back legs and losing the ability to walk.

Diagnosed with IVDD, an MRI revealed a severe disc extrusion compressing his spinal cord at T13-L1. He underwent emergency surgery the same day to relieve the pressure, followed by strict recovery and rehabilitation.

What followed was an incredible journey, one filled with uncertainty, progress, and hope, as Frankie gradually regained strength and the ability to walk again.

Today, he continues to improve, showing just how powerful early intervention, expert care, and dedication can be in restoring a dog’s quality of life.

French bulldogs may be popular, but they are also predisposed to neurological disease, with up to 1 in 5 affected.

From IVDD and congenital spinal malformations to brain tumors and autoimmune inflammation, these conditions can impact mobility, behavior, and overall quality of life.

Warning signs to watch for include pain, weakness, wobbliness, seizures, behavior changes, and loss of coordination.

Early detection is critical. Advanced imaging, such as MRI, plays a key role in diagnosis and treatment planning. If something feels off, seeking evaluation from a veterinary neurologist can make all the difference.

We’re answering 9 frequently asked questions pet owners have about IVDD.

From what it actually is to how it presents and what comes next, consider this your quick guide to one of the most common spinal conditions we see.

Why might your pet need an MRI?

MRI is a noninvasive, pain-free way to evaluate the brain and spinal cord, helping us identify the exact cause of neurologic symptoms like seizures, weakness, pain, or changes in behavior.

Because many conditions can look similar, advanced imaging allows us to diagnose issues such as IVDD, tumors, inflammation, or strokes and create the most effective treatment plan.

Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI provides detailed images of soft tissues, making it the gold standard for neurologic disease.

At SEVN, our high-field MRI allows for faster scans with greater clarity, helping us get answers while keeping your pet as safe as possible.
