Every year, mink or weasels would leave a few of their tell-tale signs of headless chickens around. Enter Vali, who pretty much started guarding the poultry full-time when I got her at 5 months old and we haven’t had a casualty since. When she was 16mo old, I went out one morning to her sitting by the water trailer in the hens pasture pen. It took me a minute to realize she had trapped something in the wheel: A mink! I couldn’t get it out, so we had to let it be so it would go away, but it sure learned that there wouldn’t be any more fast food chicken options for dinner!😅

Vig is very affectionate and everyone’s favorite! The barn cats are always trying to cuddle with him and all the critters feel safe and comfortable around him. As a male, he is more wary of people, but given some time to warm up, he will welcome as many loves you will give him. At only a year and half old, he’s been a dependable poultry guard for some time already. His first job at a few months old was guarding the geese while they were nesting. Vig is easy going and will take on anything you throw at him. He and Vali make a good team.

Vali is sweet tempered, laid back, but will not back down from any threat to her charges. She shows wisdom though, when running threats off and will stop chasing them when they leave her territory, rather than getting carried away with the chase. Tough yet sensitive, she has the gift of a medically inclined nose and knows when her charges have an issue often before I do!

We run several hundred birds per year so the poultry are the most vulnerable on our farm. She mainly guards poultry but does well with goats and is also around the barn cats, the house dog, and the other farmers’ cows that run in the same pasture.
