💚 Why Emergency Planning Matters for Reptiles 💚
Medical emergencies can happen quickly, especially with babies. Knowing what signs to watch for, having a vet plan in place ahead of time, and staying calm can make a huge difference.
Around Tuesday, one of our baby bearded dragons, Kaiju, stopped using her back legs and a bump had appeared overnight at the base of her tail. At first, it appeared to be possible impaction, so we increased hydration and provided supportive care. She did pass stool, and the bump at the base of her tail went down briefly, but her mobility didn’t improve.
By the next day, the bump got bigger and more pronounced and once touching the area caused an extreme pain response, we knew it was more serious. A vet visit confirmed that Kaiju had fractured her spine. We don’t know what exactly happened, but we’re pretty sure she fell and landed at just the right angle to cause the break. 💔
She’s now on a pain management plan while we closely monitor her ability to pass stool and urates. We’re increasing soaks and hydration and transitioning her to a softer diet to reduce strain. Long-term, we don’t yet know what her outcome will be, but we’re fully committed to supporting her and will work with our vet team every step of the way to make sure she’s living the best possible life she can.
While we’re not veterinarians, we’re always here to help, answer questions, and provide trusted exotic vet recommendations for those who are local. Preparation matters more than people realize. 💚
