Puppies for Christmas? Please Read This First.
Every year, as the holiday season nears, we get dozens of last-minute calls and messages from people looking for a “Christmas puppy.” While the idea of a fluffy little bundle under the tree is undeniably magical—and trust us, as parents and animal lovers, we get it—it’s something we’ve spoken against for many years.
A puppy is not just a gift. It’s a 10–15 year commitment.
Even if we have puppies ready to go home around Christmas, they are typically reserved shortly after birth by families who have been on our waiting list and made a thoughtful, long-term decision. These homes are not driven by emotion, empty stockings, or a sudden panic to find the “perfect gift.” They are prepared, educated, and intentional.
Yes, the thought of a puppy on Christmas morning is heartwarming—I would have been over the moon if my dad brought one home, and I know our own children would light up too. But behind the scenes, the reality of shopping for a puppy during the busiest season of the year is often chaotic, stressful, and unfair to the puppy.
So if you’re dreaming of a puppy for Christmas:
Start now.
Do your research.
Contact reputable breeders early.
Plan for litters and timing.
Avoid scams, "urgent" ads, and poor-quality breeders capitalizing on the season.
We love bringing puppies into the lives of committed families—but that magic deserves preparation, not impulse.
With care,
Vom Geliebten Haus
