Bear has been with us about a month and is getting into shape! He has lost a few pounds and is now able to jump into the car on his own! That's perfect timing since we have had a few families interested in adopting him and he will be hopping in the car to head to a meeting tomorrow! Wish him luck!

Yesterday was dental surgery day for our trio and it ended up being a very big day for them! Once they were put under anesthesia and our vet could get a better look inside their mouths, he realized it was much worse than we all anticipated. Beatrix (dark brown brindle Chi) was already missing some teeth, but she had to have all her remaining teeth taken out! Archie (tan Terrier) was able to save a few, but had to have 18 extractions! We knew little Remy (small white and tan Chihuahua) was in bad shape just from the smell of his mouth and constant sneezing from his sinuses, so, it wasn't a surprise that he had the most extractions. He had 25 teeth pulled! Total teeth extracted for the day: 60!

The three also had fistulas (infections/abcesses under the gum that form a tunnel for pus to drain) that had to be sutured up. If untreated, the infection could have damaged the jawbone or caused sepsis. :( Thankfully, they were able to take care of those during the procedures as well.

Even though Beatrix had all her teeth removed, she was just happy to see us when we arrived to pick her up and bounced around like nothing happened. Archie was the last to get his procedure done so he remained drugged out for most of the evening, but he is back to himself today! Remy is so tiny and the surgery was a bit rough on him. Because he had a fistula draining into his sinuses, blood was dripping from his nose most of the night. He is still recovering and has been sleeping most of the day. We are doing extra cleanup and making sure they are comfortable with pain meds and very soft wet food.

They are not feeling their best right now, but they also must have been in a lot of pain from their infected teeth for awhile and it never would have gotten better without surgery. As much as we hate putting them through this, they can finally heal and should soon be feeling better than they have in a long time!

Because their surgeries were so extensive, they were also expensive! We spent over $2,100 yesterday! We received about $200 in donations for them (which we spent on their exams and bloodwork) and could really use more help! If you haven't already donated, please consider a small contribution to help us cover this medical bill! We are 100% volunteer run and rely on donations to continue to give our rescue animals the best care possible. Plus, all donations are tax deductible! EIN: 46-0552864

We are so excited to announce that Yara has been adopted! We couldn't believe how long she was with us, but she ended up in the perfect home! We drove all the way to Thousand Oaks so she could meet her new people and begin her new life!

Her parents decided to rename her Zooey and she quickly became one of the family! She is a very active girl and now she has two young kids to play with and a doggy brother to wrestle with! There's always something going on and Zooey is in the middle of it all! She loves to run around the house, follow the kids to catch any food crumbs they might drop, play with her toys, go for walks in the neighborhood, find new places to hike, and snuggle in bed! She's also already visited the beach, and they have many more adventures planned!

Zooey is very loved and she has everything we ever wished for her! It took a little time, but it was totally worth the wait to see her so happy!

We didn't even get a chance to name this cutie before she got scooped up by a family, but they decided to call her Luna.

Her family was mourning the loss of one of their senior cats and wanted to pour love into another baby. Luna helped them heal with her silly kitten antics and sweet, soft cuddles.

Luna is enjoying her new life, growing up with a young girl, playing with her big kitty sister, and sleeping in bed with her mom each night. She also has a stroller and is getting leash trained so she can go on adventures outside with her family. They plan on bringing her along on their next road trip!

We are very excited for her future and know she is going to be very loved and spoiled forever!

We missed Giving Tuesday this year, but we still really need your support!

Last month, THREE of our dogs were returned! Archie was adopted from our rescue nearly 10 years ago! A year later, the same family fell in love with Remy. Then, they foster failed Beatrix! The trio have been with their family a long time and have grown up with the kids. Unfortunately, finances have been very tight recently and their family was faced with losing their home. They were grateful to find relatives to stay with, but they would not be able to bring any pets along.

It has been a heartbreaking situation for everyone. Their mom was devastated at the thought of saying goodbye to them after all these years and we hated the idea of taking the pups from a family that loved them. It was also sad to think of the dogs possibly being separated and losing each other as well. Everyone scrambled to find a solution, but they ran out of time. The day before they had to move, we swung by and picked them up.

We didn't share them right away because we were hoping their family would have a chance to find another place and/or a plan to welcome them home. But, at this point, we have to start moving forward for their future.

The dogs have been settling in well. We thought it would be a big adjustment, but they have made themselves at home. We were also surprised to find out that they aren't extremely bonded despite living together for so long. They do get along well, but Remy and Archie seem more interested in spending time with people than any dog. Beatrix has made new friends with our other animals and just doesn't like to be alone. She will sleep under the blankets with us at night or find a furry friend to cuddle with. Of course, they are seniors now so they aren't super active. Beatrix is the most energetic, but they all spend most of the day curled up in a lap or couch cushion.

While they seem to be pretty happy, they are behind on medical care so we made sure to get them into our vet for an exam and bloodwork. The most pressing issue is their teeth. They all have extensive dental disease. Little Remy has an infection in his mouth that is affecting his sinuses. Archie has had a couple teeth fall out already. Beatrix's mouth doesn't smell as bad, but she appears to be in pain since she yelped when light pressure was put on the right side of her jaw. Their teeth are so rotten, our vet said it will likely be easy to remove them. But, they need to be removed. So, as long as their bloodwork comes back showing they are healthy enough for anesthesia, they will all be going for dentals soon!

That's where we need your help! Today's exams and bloodwork already cost us $437. We have never spent less than $700 on a dental, so we know this is going to add up quickly! Our senior dog adoption fee is only $250 so it definitely won't cover their vet bill if/when they get adopted.

We have so much to be grateful for this holiday! We love that we are able to spend our days helping animals and we know it's because of our amazing volunteers, fosters, donors and adopters! Thank you all for always supporting us!

This week, we also have an extra reason to be thankful! You may remember that Charlie had a medical scare back in April. During a routine exam, our vet found a mass in his bladder that everyone believed was cancer. We got him into a specialist where they performed another ultrasound and found the mass had broken up into small particles that were floating around in his urine. A urinalysis came back showing that those particles were crystals! We were elated that he didn't have cancer! However, he was at high risk of those crystals collecting in his urethra and blocking his ability to urinate. He was started on a prescription urinary diet right away and we had to keep an eye on him to make sure the crystals dissolved or passed without issue. It has been 6 mo since his last ultrasound and his bladder is now completely clear! (Photo of his ultrasound in April and the most current one from this week in the comments).

Since Charlie joined our rescue, he has faced several medical obstacles. It took us over a year to find out he had a muscle disorder (which, for those who know his story, he hasn't had an episode in almost 2 years!) and, we felt terrible that he had to struggle with another health issue this year. Charlie never complains though. Through it all, he remains the sweetest, happiest dog we know!

If Charlie had been diagnosed with cancer in April, he likely would not be with us today. While we are grateful for the time we have with all of our animals, we are especially thankful that Charlie is celebrating the holiday with us, playing with his toys, and patiently waiting for a Thanksgiving treat!

Meet our newest rescue!

After spending 6 years with his family, Bear suddenly lost the only home he had known. His dad hadn't been feeling well for awhile and, recently, had to be hospitalized. Bear stayed with relatives while doctors ran tests and waited for him to recover. But, his dad wasn't getting better. When they found out he has stage 4 lung cancer, they realized he wouldn't be coming home.

The relatives weren't in a position to keep Bear long-term, so they reached out to us for help. We picked him up this weekend and he is celebrating Thanksgiving with his new foster family. For many dogs who have only known one home their entire lives, it can be hard to adjust to a new place. However, Bear seems pretty laid back and is just happy to hang out with everyone. He loves meeting other dogs and exploring his new environment!

Unfortunately, Bear's dad was declining long before he was hospitalized so Bear wasn't getting any exercise and was just being fed table scraps. He is now very overweight at 45lbs! He won't be stuffing his belly with us this holiday because he started a diet immediately. Other than his weight, he appears to be pretty healthy. Bear just had a vet exam and is already neutered and vaccinated which means he is available to adopt right away!

If you're interested in Bear, please submit an adoption application on our website at www.dominoeffectanimalrescue.org
