We have patience with humans who need time to process what we are asking of them. We need to show our dogs the same respect. Have patience. I know with my own dog, he often takes a bit of time to do what I ask of him. He isn't running around doing other things, rather he is sitting or standing, looking at me and mentally processing the information. And often that information includes what is going on around him. Simply waiting for him is the correct and respectful thing for me to do. Pushing your dog or rushing them won't help. Simply give them time.

The use of empathy, kindness, and great treats can make a difference to anxious and fearful dogs.
