🚨Important community update: MAS Animals Need You! 🚨
Memphis Animal Services is making an urgent plea to the community to rescue healthy dogs from the shelter asap.
The shelter has discovered a positive distemper case in a puppy who was part of a large litter that came to the shelter on the night of December 30.
The shelter is already over capacity and needs the community's assistance to adopt healthy animals and free up space for dogs that will need to be rescued from the cold weather over the next several days. Most of the dogs in the shelter have not been exposed to the one dog that has tested positive.
We urge all pet owners to keep their pets safe & healthy during this time. Here's what you need to know about how to prevent and spot distemper:
🔹What's distemper: It's a contagious viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems. It is spread through direct contact with infected dogs or their secretions, such as saliva, nasal discharge, or f***s.
🔹Vaccination: Ensure your pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations. Distemper is preventable, and vaccinations are the best defense against this virus. At MAS, all dogs are vaccinated within 24 hours of arrival, most within the first hour.
🔹Symptoms to Watch For: If your pet shows signs like sneezing, nasal discharge, coughing, or lethargy. please consult your veterinarian immediately.
🔹Keep Distance: If your dog is showing symptoms, keep them home and away from dog parks, day cares, groomers, and pet food stores.
🔹Spread the word: Please share this message to help keep our community informed and our pets safe.
Together, we can help prevent the spread of distemper. Thank you for your cooperation!
