Yes, there was a first dog. For me and my partner, Adam Dunn, that dog was Golda. In January of 2010, we entered Queensbury SPCA and saw this beautiful golden retriever /(wheaten?) terrier mix puppy in a crate with her littermates, the only golden one. We were told their mother had been euthanized before they arrived. She left with us and was named for a strong powerful woman whose name included the dog's color.

A few weeks ago, on November 10th, Golda turned 16 years old. She is not doing well. Over the past few months, she has lost a great deal of weight and suffered from severe diarreah. After a recent vet visit, dewormer and antibiotic she won't swallow, we decided to adhere to our organization's hospice philosophy and forego further medical intervention at this time. Two days ago, Golda stopped eating (except for an occasional treat). The picture below is our beloved Golda asleep tonight.

Now we are trying to wrap our heads around a life without Golda. We wonder how losing her will affect the dynamic at PiP, as the other dogs have always looked to her as the Alpha, to protect them, enforce limitations and provide direction. One thing is certain though . . . Golda changed our lives for the better and the lives of the many other dogs, temporary fosters and permanent residents, she accepted into her home and ultimately the sanctuary.

Thank you to the wonderful person - you know who you are - who has a carton of dog food delivered to PiP on the same day every month like clockwork! Your package arrived today and, as always, we were thrilled to see it waiting outside our door.

Note: She says she hopes that someday she can be a dog rescuer too. I always have to remind her that she already is one!

Without food donations, we can't save dogs!

After last posting a picture of one of our long bonded pairs sharing a bed, I thought it would be fun to post pictures of some of our more unlikely bedfellows cuddled up together in beds.

Yay! PiP just placed this approximately three year young little "Tootsie" with just one quick text to someone special we knew was waiting for a sweet doxie just like her.

This is Evie. Evie is a 3 year old, 14 lb. Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle mix) who finds herself seeking a new home. Her mom is caring for a husband who has Alzheimer's Disease. They recently moved to an apartment where Evie's excessive barking causes a problem and her excessive energy (running around) poses a danger to her dad. Evie loves to be groomed and enjoys affection on her own terms. Mom thinks she might do well as an only dog in a family with an older child or children who would play with her and perhaps participate in agility training with her. Evie is currently ESA certified. If you are interested in adopting Evie, please reach out to Paws in Paradise - NY .

We were very sad to have to give up our extremely adorable CDHA.net foster dog, Lulu, this past Saturday, even though she had only been with us for one week. Luckily, she went home with a wonderful PiP volunteer (who had fallen in love with her immediately) and has already been back to visit us. I wasn't the only one happy to see Lulu. The dogs and Milo, the cat, were delighted to see her again as well!
