Today was a challenge for sure! It was a hot, humid day. The index reached 115°🥵 sustained for over 5 hours. The challenge? One of my 3 fans was not working when I went out to check on them at 105°. I do not know how long it was off, but it was hot in the rabbitry. The rabbits without the fan did great, though!🙌 They were happy when it was back on💯
I thought that was it. I was wrong. Two hours later, when the ice bottles and water bottles needed switched out and refreshed I discovered the freezer died. There were no frozen bottles left, they had all thawed🫠 The new freezer is currently plugged in so that at midnight I can put everything back in. This includes rabbit meat, hides, heads, and ice bottles.
Through all of this, my rabbits were absolute rockstars!! They handled the heat very well, even though they were not in ideal situations throughout. Not one in heat distress, not a single one. All 20 are tucked in for the night with fresh water bowls and bottles, hay, pellets, and fresh picked comfrey.
This could have ended badly for one or all of them. The only loss was that I missed out watching the local fireworks display with my family. I am grateful and at peace about having high standards for heat hardy stock🙌💯 This is a true testament that all the hard work towards hardy stock is 💯 worth it!!
