🌾🐴 A Successful Farm Tour at Mended Sparrow!

Big thanks to everyone who joined us yesterday for the farm tour—it was such an amazing day on the farm! 🙌

Our c**t, Sparrow’s Orion, handled his training assignment like a pro—we’re so proud of his progress as a future Equine-Assisted Learning horse. 💪✨

We also welcomed new volunteers eager to join our mission and support the service members, veterans, first responders, and families we serve. We’re so grateful to have more hands and hearts on this journey. 💛

📣 Exciting News from Mended Sparrow!

We’re thrilled to welcome Lory Steverson as the newest member of our Board of Directors! 🎉

Meet Lory:

Lory has been a dedicated member of the Richmond Police Department’s professional staff since 2020. In 2022, she joined the department’s Critical Incident Stress Management/Peer Support Team (CISM/PST), where she currently serves as Secretary. Her work in peer support reflects her passion for mental wellness and helping others through difficult seasons.

Originally from Philadelphia, PA, Lory’s love for horses began in childhood when she helped groom a classmate’s uncle’s horses. She quickly discovered the calming effect these animals had on her and often visited them as a way to relieve stress. That early connection left a lasting impression and continues to shape her belief in the healing nature of horses.

Lory was married to a former Marine and supported him through his journey with combat-related mental health struggles. During that time, she experienced firsthand the emotional weight carried by spouses of veterans. Even in the most difficult moments, she found comfort simply by looking at pictures of horses.

That experience deepened her belief in the mission of Mended Sparrow. She knows what it’s like to feel unseen in your struggle, and she’s passionate about walking alongside other's who have loved ones battling similar challenges. Through her journey, Lory offers a voice of compassion, connection, and hope to those navigating their own path toward healing.

What a great weekend at Hanover Night Out! 🐎✨

A huge shoutout to our amazing volunteers Kelly and Lizzy—you both showed up with heart, grit, and kindness, and we’re so grateful for the way you represent Mended Sparrow. 💙

We made some incredible new connections—and it was really awesome to hear that our presence is being recognized in the community. Several veterans and first responders stopped by saying, “I know who you guys are.” That means everything. 🙌

Thank you to the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office for hosting such a well-organized and meaningful event—we’re honored to be part of this community.

Due to the extreme heat forecasted for tomorrow, we’re canceling this month’s farm tour. The safety of our guests, volunteers, and horses comes first! 🐴💧

🧰Mended Sparrow, Inc. recently hosted a leather belt making class, with materials generously donated and expert instruction provided by Shield Maiden Custom Leatherworks, LLC. Each participant designed and created their own leather belt, leaving not only with a handcrafted piece but also with a memorable, hands-on experience.

🔨We’re grateful for the partnership with Shield Maiden and for everyone who joined us to make this event such a success.

🦷 Herd Dental Day at Mended Sparrow!

All of our horses had their teeth floated this week—a big (and very important) part of keeping them healthy and happy.

Why do horses need their teeth floated?
Horses’ teeth grow continuously and can develop sharp points or uneven surfaces over time. If left unchecked, these can cause:

Painful mouth sores

Trouble chewing or dropping feed

Discomfort when wearing a halter or bit

Behavioral issues caused by dental pain

By floating (filing) their teeth, we help ensure every horse in our herd can eat comfortably, maintain proper weight, and stay at their best. A healthy mouth = a happy, thriving horse!

A huge thank-you to Virginia Equine dentist for taking such good care of our herd. 🐴💛
