Our Board & Train program includes private lessons with owners throughout their dog’s stay. This allows us to build a strong foundation with each dog while beginning the intentional transfer of skills to their owners under trainer guidance.

Today was Reyna’s 3-Week Board & Train private lesson!

We started in a lower-distraction environment, where we worked with Reyna’s owners on the foundational handling skills needed to communicate effectively with her. Once those skills were established, we headed to Downtown Mebane to continue developing their confidence and handling abilities in a higher-distraction environment.

Reyna’s Mom and Dad are natural handlers, which made the transfer of skills an absolute breeze!

One of the most rewarding parts of our program is watching the relationship between a dog and their owners evolve as communication, understanding, and confidence grow. I’m incredibly proud of how far Reyna has come over the past three weeks, and equally proud of her parents for the work they’ve put in.

I also want to extend a huge thank-you to Reyna’s parents for their understanding and patience while I’ve been dealing with strep throat since Wednesday. I genuinely appreciate their flexibility, understanding, and continued trust in our training process as we had to pivot our training focus for a few days.

Our goal isn’t simply to send home a better-trained dog. It’s to send home owners who understand how to communicate with, guide, and continue developing that dog long after their Board & Train is complete.

That’s where the real, lasting progress happens. ❤️

Well stated. You and your dog deserve a life of adventures together ❤️

Well stated. You and your dog deserve a life of adventures together ❤️

Some dogs are tethered to a kennel.
Others are tethered to our expectations.
And that tether is much harder to see.

They live inside our homes now.
They sleep on orthopaedic beds.
A few toys to play with. A wardrobe full of coats.
They are loved. Oh, how they are loved.

But a loved life is not always a lived life.

We shrink their world for convenience.
We want a dog that fits into our life,
not a life that stretches to fit a dog.

So before they even arrive, the plan is made.
They will be calm when people come over.
They will be fine with 10 minutes around the same block.
They won't complain when we skip it.
Five minutes of fetch while dinner cooks.
And they will be my loyal companion.

But what if who they are doesn't fit the plan?
What if they were bred to run for miles and we give them a block?
What if they were bred to use their nose, and we never give them anything worth sniffing?

So the cracks show.
The chewed rug.
The paint scratched off the wall.
Whining at the door.
Jumping all over guests because it's the most excitement they've had in 8 days.

And we call it misbehaviour.

So we train them harder.
Not to understand them better-
but to make them fit neatly again.
Calmer.
Quieter.
They need to accept this is the life we decided they should have.

After all, dogs are meant to be loyal companions.
We never stop to ask if we are being a loyal companion to them.

We look at photos of dogs chained to kennels and feel angry.
We all agree, that's no life for a dog.
We give ours a bed instead of a rag on the ground.
A beautiful home instead of a chain.
A couple of toys instead of dirt and twigs.
We just don't see that the chain can still be there

🎉 BIG WIN FOR REYNA TONIGHT! 🎉

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been doing tons of structured exposure work to help Reyna work through her reactivity toward humans and other dogs.

Her stranger danger improved relatively quickly, but her reactivity toward other dogs has been an ongoing project.

Rather than simply teaching neutrality, we’ve been working to help Reyna build positive associations, develop curiosity, and learn appropriate social interactions through carefully managed experiences with our own dogs and other dogs who have visited Mebane Canine.

I swear, something magical happens in a dog’s brain when you start to see that shift from reactivity ➡️ curiosity ➡️ PLAY! ❤️

Tonight, we invited Kevin, a former Board & Train who has an absolute heart of gold, and his parents to stop by for some additional exposure work with Reyna.

Initially, Reyna showed some reactivity. But as we worked through the interaction, something incredible happened: she chose to let loose and play with Kevin!

Watching her move from that initial fear response into a place where she felt comfortable enough to engage in play was absolutely glorious. 🥹

I’m so proud of the progress Reyna has made, but I’m especially excited about how quickly she was able to move through that initial response and begin making better choices.

This is what behavior modification is about. Not just suppressing a reaction, but helping a dog develop the confidence, skills, and positive experiences to navigate the world differently.

Reyna, we are SO proud of you! ❤️

What’s Reyna up to? Tons of controlled and structured exposure work with lots of fun sprinkled in.

Disclaimer: (Hate me if you must) I’m not a huge fan of Dog Parks. I fully acknowledge that dog parks can be GREAT if the right dogs and owners are there. Dog parks can be very questionable if the wrong dog/owner shows up. We have a close knit dog park community nearby, which proved to be incredibly beneficial today.

Reyna’s training will be most beneficial if unlimited amounts of dogs can be met. This is critical to her generalizing appropriate behavior. We visited a local dog park today, I knew the owners and the dogs that were there and they agreed to allow their dogs to participate in Reyna’s work. We took the process slow and it ended in her being off leash in the park with new dogs. Huge improvement and I couldn’t be prouder of her and the decisions she is making.

The work we do with our Board & Trains is constant. When we aren’t doing formal skill work, we’re reinforcing appropriate manners and behaviors in the home. These dogs live with us and become fully integrated into our household and pack.

Two weeks ago, Reyna came to Mebane Canine for a 28-Day Board & Train focused primarily on behavior modification for intense reactivity. When she arrived, she was reactive to both dogs and strangers. Over the past two weeks, we’ve worked to lessen her fear, support her curiosity, and reinforce appropriate decision-making.

Today, we spent a few hours at the Spooktacular in Downtown Mebane. Reyna experienced crowds, costumes, noise, countless people, and dogs—and handled it all beautifully.

Getting to witness firsthand how far she has come was incredibly rewarding.

It’s wins like today that keep the passion for this work going. ❤️

So proud of this girl and the hard work she is putting in ❤️

The two leashes are for security purposes at this point. Reyna is is being trained to understand leash pressure using a slip chain and that is very new to her. The orange leash is a slip lead and gives me a backup option, should it be needed. She is doing great in our Board and Train program ❤️

Please excuse my appearance. Dog training is sweaty, slobbery, and somehow I always end up with mud on me. Looking nice in pictures is misleading for the actual work that I put into helping pups and I don’t waste my time on that 🤷‍♀️

Couldn’t agree more! By far, my favorite dog trainer is Stonnie Dennis. My training experience started with Stonnie’s DIY puppy program with Henry. His program ignited a passion I never knew I had - working with and training dogs.

A year long course, where you either do the work or you don’t. I did the work everyday…nearly all day, regardless of the weather. I struggled with typical training frustrations. From his program, I wanted to grow my skills and help other families because I firmly believe our dogs deserve more in life than knowing how to sit on command.

If you’re looking for phenomenal training videos, check out Stonnie’s YouTube Channel. I train because I love it, not because I need to…which results in me have no desire to compete with other trainers and (most importantly) to be able and willing to be 100% transparent with owners. Either way, I recommend everyone checks out Stonnie’s YouTube Channel!

Even with solid training advice, a lot of dogs still act up. The mi...
