When we get a call about a stray, we rarely know what we're getting into. We always hope it's a friendly dog and it gets a second chance at life.
When we got a call about a Doberman running hwy 98, we were a little shocked. We got her and realized she was incredibly friendly, very social, and super well mannered. Someone had to be missing this baby. Surely someone would call to claim her quickly.
That was in April.
As time moved along and no one called in a panic missing her, we did what we do. We got her vetted and gave her all the love we possibly could. And then the first mass formed. Quite literally overnight. Off to the vet we went. Then it opened up. We were concerned but hopeful. The amazing staff at Nunnery Veterinary saw her immediately and decided they needed to open her up. After a week of waiting we got the news. Blastomycosis, a fungal infection. The prognosis wasn't good. It was an aggressive fungus and considering how quickly the masses were developing, the treatment plan was keep her comfortable for as long as her body was fighting.
After some searching, we found the perfect hospice foster for her. A family who could give her undivided attention and let her be a dog for hoever long was available.
And that's exactly what she's doing. Being a dog. A very spoiled dog.
The day she went to foster, ACO Parks took her for, possibly, her first ever pup cup, learned that she's a terrible co pilot because she wants to be THE pilot, and loves to stick her nose right into the AC vent. 10 stars for a trip with Stella.
Our jobs are, unfortunately, full of sad stories. But we refuse to let Stella's be a mark in the sad column. She isn't on the streets, sick and in pain. She didn't starve or have to fight for scraps.
Her story is one of love and devotion. She gave us, and is giving her fosters, all the love she's given. In her final time on this earth, all she will know is affection, safety (especially from her biggest fear, thunderstorms), and love. Oh and treats. All the treats.
We couldn't do what we do without all of you. But for a family to take on a hospice dog, knowing what's coming, well they deserve some extra love. Lizzy & Daniel Pierce are incredible humans. They opened their hearts and home to our Stella. They listened to the seemingly endless amount of information on medicine, things to look out for, and some insider info on our Stella girl. We don't know how much time she has left on this earth, but we do know that the Pierce family is going to make every single day the best day ever. We genuinely cannot thank them enough for the selfless act of opening their home and hearts to this girl.
And also a big thank you to everyone who donated to Stella's treatment. Because of you, we were able to get answers which led to knowing what we needed to do for her comfort and well being.
Forever our Stella girl ๐พ
