Hello. I’m the Praying Mantis (well, 200 of us). Sorry we look like a piece of dried foam or "pre-chewed gum" on your hedge.
You’re doing your March "spring cleaning" in the garden, and you’re tempted to snip this twig off and toss it in the green bin. Please don't. This is an Ootheca. Inside this hardened, weather-proof foam are hundreds of tiny mantises waiting for the first warm week of April to hatch.
We are the only insect that can turn its head 180 degrees to hunt.
When we hatch, we will disperse throughout your garden and spend the entire summer eating grasshoppers, flies, and moths. We are the ultimate "stealth" pest control. We don't need chemicals; we just need a place to wake up.
What to do:
If you find one of these while pruning, just move that specific twig to a safe, upright spot in a bush elsewhere. Don't bring it inside (unless you want 200 tiny roommates), and don't throw it in the trash.
I’m sorry I look like a piece of garbage.
But your vegetable garden will be guarded all summer because of me.
