This week weāre talking about a heavier subject: behavioral euthanasia, also known as BE.
It can feel taboo to talk about, and people often have strong opinions. But the truth is that sometimes behavioral euthanasia is the most peaceful and compassionate decision we can make for a dog we love deeply.
Behavioral euthanasia is the decision to peacefully end a dogās life due to severe aggression or anxiety that has become unsafe and unmanageable. Many people may say it could have been avoided with different training techniques or a different home environmentābut that often couldnāt be farther from the truth.
Families faced with this decision have usually tried everything they possibly can. Theyāve committed to training. Theyāve changed routines. Theyāve spent thousands of dollars on trainers, behavior specialists, and medical testing. Theyāve rearranged their lives trying to help their dog feel safe and successful.
And sometimes, despite every effort, there is no improvement.
Some dogs are simply wired differently. They may be genetically predisposed to severe anxiety, aggression, or both. These intractable cases are not a training issue, and they are not because someone ādidnāt do enough.ā In many cases, these dogs are living with a brain that never allows them to truly feel safe.
Zeke and his family were victims of this heartbreaking circumstance.
His parents did everything they couldātraining courses, medical testing, changing their routines, and trying every avenue available to help him. Months later, there was still no change, and in some cases things were getting worse. Zeke was living in a constant state of anxiety, with no clear triggers and extremely unpredictable behaviors.
For him, this was the most peaceful decision we could make.
These dogs are not ābad dogs.ā They are often deeply loved dogs with minds that are fighting against them every day.
So if youāve ever had to make this decision, or youāre facing it now, or you have judged someone for it, I hope you hear this:
You are not a bad person.
They are not bad people for choosing that route.
Your dog was not a bad dog.
Their dog was not a bad dog.
You are far from a failure.
They are far from a failure.
Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is give them peace when their minds wonāt let them have it on their own.
Prayers for Zekes family as they go through this difficult time šš¼
