In the vast dome of the night sky, where Wanakpe Unk'ce (the stars) whisper ancient wisdom to the Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires), Lakota star knowledge reflects the sacred principle of Kapemni—"as it is above, so it is below."
The earth mirrors the heavens, and every constellation holds stories of creation, heroism, guidance, and harmony with Wakan Tanka (the Great Spirit). These legends, passed orally through generations, guided ceremonies, migrations, and daily life across the plains. 🌌👁️🦅🏔️
The Birth of Fallen Star (Wicahpi Oihankesni) and Bear's Lodge (Mato Tipila) 💫🦬🏹
A beautiful woman from the star nation descended to earth, marrying a Lakota man. She warned that she could never look at a porcupine, but one day she did—and vanished back to the sky, falling to her death while pregnant. From her body emerged a miraculous boy, Fallen Star, who grew rapidly into a powerful hero with star-born gifts.
Years later, seven young girls playing near the Black Hills were pursued by fierce bears. Fallen Star called upon the earth to rise, forming a towering rock that lifted the girls to safety—the origin of Mato Tipila (Bear's Lodge, known as Devils Tower). The bears' claw marks scarred its sides as they tried to climb. In the sky, this sacred place mirrors as a constellation (aligning with Gemini), reminding us of protection and the link between earth and stars.
Some versions connect Fallen Star to aiding against thunder beings or eagles. 🤍💥
The Seven Girls and the Red Eagle (Wicincala Sakowin) 🕊️🔥
Seven little girls, left alone at camp, were snatched one by one over seven days by a great red eagle spirit. The people cried for help, and Fallen Star arrived. He battled the eagle, defeating it and returning the girls' bodies to earth—but placing their spirits eternally in the sky as the Pleiades cluster (Wicincala Sakowin, the Seven Little Girls). This constellation also forms the head of a great bison, symbolizing abundance and the cycle of life. It teaches vigilance, loss, and immortal guardianship. 🌽🦅
The Spirit Path and the Sacred Pipe in the Stars (Wanagi Tacanku & Chanunpa) 🌌🤍
The Milky Way is the Wanagi Tacanku—the Spirit Path or Road of Souls—where the departed travel to the spirit world. When a person dies, their wanagi (spirit) journeys along this luminous trail, guided by stars.
The Big Dipper is Wicakiyuhapi or Chanunpa Wakan (the Sacred Pipe), with its bowl as the pipe bowl and handle as the stem. Nearby, Cansasa Ipusye (Dried Red Willow, incorporating Aries/Triangulum) provides the red bark for lining the pipe. In spring alignments, this "Pipe Ceremony in the Stars" signals renewal and ceremonies. The three handle stars are sometimes mourners following the spirit. This mirrors earthly rites, emphasizing prayer and interconnection. 🕊️❤️🔥
The Race Around the World 🌈🏹
Long ago, the animals and birds raced to determine humanity's fate—if birds won, people would stay on earth; if animals, humans might perish. The clever magpie, though small and often overlooked, outwitted stronger runners like buffalo and bear, winning the race. In honor, the magpie is placed prominently in the sky (near certain stars), a reminder that humility, wit, and perseverance triumph—and that humans belong here, in balance with creation. 😜🎯
Other Sacred Patterns 🐢🦅
To Win (Blue Woman or Birth Woman):
Part of the Big Dipper region, linked to feminine power and creation.
Wakinyan (Thunderbird): A mighty constellation embodying thunder beings who battle chaos.
Keya (Turtle): Symbolizing longevity and the earth.
Agleska (Salamander): Tied to transformation.
Naga (Dried Willow): Guiding seasonal ceremonies.
Bison forms across Orion and beyond, reflecting the buffalo's central role.
These stories, rooted in observation of the Black Hills and plains skies, form a living map—different yet parallel to Greek views. Orion's Belt is a bison's backbone; the earth’s sacred sites align with celestial paths. Lakota star knowledge endures as a beacon of identity, renewal, and cosmic relation. Look up tonight... the ancestors are watching. 🤍 🦬 🌌 BOØM 💥🫶
