This month marks our 23rd year of caring for for rescue horses at our small Virginia equine sanctuary. I adopted my first horse in 1996, an Off-The-Track Thoroughbred, then three more came to stay that same year. I couldn't say no to all those big beautiful needy eyes! Now a total of five horses reside as permanent residents. We've also cared for several foster horses that came to rehabilitate before moving on to their forever homes.

It's been a lot of hard work, and I have worried so much about the seniors, Reidy is now 27, and sadly, we lost Kimber last November to complications from Cushing's Disease, but life ambles on and the days provide healing.

A new horse, Paulie, adopted from New Vocations racehorse adoption program, has come to stay. Forever, of course. And as the circle of life would have it, Paulie stood tirelessly at Kimber's stall door, keeping vigil, during Kimber's final days, providing comfort, friendship, perhaps just saying goodbye. Nevertheless, you could feel the love.

Today, its such a beautiful thing, watching this young, 7yr old retired racehorse now nibbling at tender spring grass with his new friends and seeing all their healthy bodies, knowing they are safe and sound and well cared for.
Today, I am grateful for all the lessons they have taught me over the years about sacrifice and humility and unconditional love.

At 26, Kimber is still going strong after a close call with his health. He has had serious issues the past few months including a heart rate of 80 and a fever of 105.5, coughing, and weight loss. We thought we were losing our boy of 21 years....but Kimber would have none of that. After a few weeks he was diagnosed with a chronic debilitating upper respiratory infection that mimicked other maladies. High doses of antibiotics and a careful watchful eye has brought about recovery for our 15 H alpha gelding. Thank you God and a big thanks to Beth Eichbeirger, DVM.
