Understanding dog body language is always important, but it’s especially important during playtime. That’s why all of our team members are trained to identify negative body language during play. We know when it’s time to separate dogs and how to avoid incidents.

Here are a few things we watch out for:

- One dog is constantly moving away from the other and trying to create space. This means they need a break.

- Increasingly rough play or relentless biting. Some dogs can become overstimulated and end up nipping or play biting a bit too hard causing the other dog to react more aggressively.

At WalkEase, everyone gets love and care! We may be there to walk the dog, but that doesn’t mean the cat gets ignored. We always make sure to give them some love and affection too. When filling water bowls, we always make sure to check and refresh all visible bowls, including the kitty’s. When we say professional pet care, that’s exactly what we mean. Your pets are treated with the highest standards of care.

You want your pet care provider to be confident in their care. During one of our recent visits, an unexpected storm started. Nala is very nervous of high winds and thunder, so even though we didn’t plan any enrichment during our visit, our team member knew this would be the best way to help her. They prepped a peanut butter filled bone to give her while the storm passed. They knew she was allowed to have this treat from previous visits and took the initiative to bring Nala some comfort without being told to do so. Her mama was very happy to see her licking her bone and being distracted from the storm and thanked our team for knowing how to comfort her pup!

With summer around the corner, it seems like a good time to go over our weather policy and what it actually means for your pup.

When temperatures exceed 85 degrees outside, we shorten walks to 15 minutes.

Our shortest walk/visit time available for booking is 30 minutes, so what do we do with the remaining time?

Anything and everything your pup wants! We always start by refreshing waters to make sure every dog has access to clean cool water after their walk. Then, depending on the pup’s energy, we’ll play or do something more relaxing like brush them. This is a great time for enrichment, so we typically hide a few treats around or fill up a puzzle toy. They can burn some mental energy while staying cool.

Even though we shorten walks on hot days, your pup will still be ready for a nice long nap by the time we leave, just like Bandit.

One of the most common behavioral issues we encounter is dogs trying to eat things on their walk. Bear, for instance, tries to pick up mulch, dirt, dried grass, and anything else she can get her paws on! That’s why we train our walkers to be attentive. We are always looking ahead and steering pups away from anything that might tempt them. Many of our clients have allergies or dietary restrictions, so it’s key that they don’t ingest anything they shouldn’t. Hiring a professional means we’re always one step ahead in keeping your dog safe.

Cats need playtime too! We spend so much time burning our pups energy that we forget kitties need enrichment as well.

Here are some of our favorite ways to make your cats in-home visit special:

- Cat TV! YouTube has lots of cat tv options. They are usually a recording of squirrels, birds, and chipmunks munching on seeds. This enriches your cat visually and auditorily because they are watching the birds and hearing them sing.

- Wand Toys: You always want to follow up mental stimulation with physical stimulation. Cat TV can sometimes put your cat into hunting mode, so let’s give them something to expend that energy on. Wand toys are perfect because they imitate real birds. Playing keep away and watching your cat soar through the air is a sure fire way to burn energy.

- Treats: Every play session should end with a meal or a treat. Cats work in a hunt, catch, kill, eat, groom, sleep cycle. Giving them a treat after playtime signifies that it’s over and they can now groom themselves and rest leaving your cat satisfied.
